The spot

Location

Šimuni is a small fishing and tourist village on the southwest side of Pag Island, roughly halfway between Novalja and Pag town. The kiting happens off the campsite and the Surfbase beach on the exposed west coast, not at a purpose-built school lagoon.

Conditions and cautions

Water is choppy, the launch is small and pebbly, and the season is June to September on W, WNW and NW thermal or Maestral wind. In peak summer the beach fills with swimmers and boats, and kiting may be restricted or give way to windsurfing only.

Older descriptions of a sandy, shallow, beginner-friendly beach do not match the pebble-and-chop accounts that came later, so treat them with caution. For a competent freerider, winger or windsurfer already on Pag it is a usable stop, but check the rules, the access and the launch on the day, before you pump.

Summer thermal W and NW is the everyday wind. Bora on the Adriatic is gusty and can arrive with no warning. No gust figures exist for this beach specifically.

The practical season is June to September. Šimuni is not the Adriatic's strongest Bora spot; that belongs to the Trieste, Kvarner, Velebit, Senj, Nin, Kaštela and Vrulje zones. In peak summer the beach is used hard enough that kiting may be restricted, or that only windsurfing goes on.

There is no kite rescue service and no kite school on this beach: the surf base on White Seagull beach runs windsurfing and catamarans only, from May to September. Inside the campsite, report an emergency to reception first on +385 23 697 441 (summer 08:00-23:00) so the ambulance can be directed to the exact spot; there is no doctor on site and the nearest clinics are Kolan 5 km, Pag 11 km and Novalja 14 km.

The launch is White Seagull beach on the camp's Punta, a small pebble beach shared with the surf base, a diving centre, beach volleyball, a bar and the marina; showers and toilets are on the beach and parking is inside the camp.Boards and catamarans are rented at the same beach from May to September.There is no marked kite zone and no kite school on the beach.

Campsite rules (2025) run the access: every guest registers at reception, unregistered stays are prohibited, the gate is open 07:00-23:00, marine craft must be declared at check-in and are charged by length, and operating any type of vessel within 300 m of the shore is prohibited. The text does not settle whether kites and wings count as vessels.

Beach and port rules

The camp's posted beach rules (2024) cover sunbeds, umbrellas, litter and closing parasols in strong wind, with nothing about kiting at all. In practice, summer here is windsurfing only, because the beach is too packed for anything else.

No municipal kitesurf ordinance for Šimuni was found (2026). Croatian port-order rules in force since 2005 also ban sailing a board at port entrances, in narrow shipping passages and inside an organised beach, which matters here because the launch sits between the marina and the fishing harbour.

Ask at Surfbase Šimuni or the campsite reception whether kites can launch that day and from where; no 2026 kite zone is published anywhere.
Do not rig among swimmers, sunbeds and beach furniture in June, July and August; the beach is packed.
Read the ACI Marina Šimuni or Otok Pag station rather than a regional forecast, because the bay and the Pag ridges make the wind local.
Come self-supported: no kite school, no marked kite zone and no rescue boat on this beach, and the nearest clinic is 5 km away in Kolan.
For lessons, go to Ljubač or Ždrijac at Nin on the mainland instead; those have actual kite schools and shallow sandy water.

Zadar Airport (ZAD) is the practical closest airport; Pula and Split are farther alternatives.

Pag is reached by the Pag bridge from the south or the Prizna-Žigljen ferry from the north. From Zadar Airport to Šimuni is about 68-69 km, roughly 1 h 9-10 min by car.
