The spot

Sabunike is the sandy stretch on the Privlaka/Nin coast north of Zadar, and on most kite maps it blurs into Queen's Beach and Ždrijac, which share the same shallow lagoon. The water is very shallow sand: flat inside the lagoon, chop or small waves on the open faces, and there is therapeutic peloid mud near Queen's Beach.

Wind patterns

Summer wind is the NW Maestral, light to moderate, arriving around 14:00-15:00 after a morning that often starts with a puff of NE Bura; the real Bura is stronger and gustier and belongs to spring and winter.

School and kite zones

The school, the rental and the marked kite zones are at Ždrijac Beach in Nin, a short move round the lagoon, and the school there runs daily from May until late October. In July and August you share the water with swimmers and lessons: the red bather zone is closed to kites and the yellow zone belongs to the school while it is teaching, at least at Ždrijac. Whether the same zones are posted on Sabunike beach itself is unconfirmed.

Expect light days in midsummer.

Best for beginners and freeriders

As a base it works for a beginner or a freerider on a family holiday; if you want stronger wind, Bura days or the open-water faces are what you have.

Rescue

No rescue boat, jet ski or lifeguard is published for Sabunike itself. The organised cover is round the lagoon at Ždrijac, where the school runs daily from May until late October and its boat and staff work with its own lessons, not with independent riders.

The real margin here is depth: much of the lagoon is shallow enough to walk, so a failed session usually ends on your feet rather than in a drift.

For anything serious the emergency number is 112, which routes mountain, water and sea rescue.

Launch

Sand all round: open beach on one side, the long sandbank and lagoon on the other. The launch locals use is at Ninske Vodice on Queen's Beach, next to Sabunike, in a shallow bay sheltered inside the lagoon. At Ždrijac, stay out of the red bather zone and the yellow school zone where they are posted.

the yellow zone is the school's, and public kiting is not allowed there while lessons run;
keep clear of the shore and swimmers, and give jumps 50 m downwind and 30 m upwind of others.

Those are the school's beach rules, not a municipal ordinance; whether they apply on Sabunike beach proper is unconfirmed.

Ride the afternoon Maestral, on from about 14:00-15:00, and expect light days in July-August; a 12 m is the usual size for Croatia's lighter thermal afternoons.
Launch inside the marked Ždrijac kite area or ask the school first; kites are banned from the red bather zone and the yellow zone is the school's while lessons run.
On a Bura day confirm the launch angle with someone local: the beaches in the lagoon face different ways, and side-on on one face is side-off on the next.
Wear booties away from the clean sand: sea urchins near Ždrijac, stones near Sabunike, plus a bridge and concrete on the Sabunike side.
Give jumps 50 m downwind and 30 m upwind of anyone else; that is the posted clearance at Ždrijac.
