The summer thermal runs roughly 11:00 to 16:00 from May to August and shows up on about half the days, topping out near 20 knots. Afternoons are the stronger half, after the morning south wind swings toward southeast. The November-April monsoon is synoptic rather than thermal and does not keep to a daily clock.

The spot

Location

Ninh Chu Bay is a real kite area on the Phan Rang coast, and a different animal from My Hoa Lagoon down the road. It hosted the Kiteboard Tour Asia stop in 2016, and the older infrastructure sat around Ninh Chu Bay Beach Club.

Water and wind

The water refuses to settle into one description: choppy deep sections, a sheltered shallow corner, patches of flat, waves further out. The engine is the Northeast monsoon from November to April, though March-September and March-November both get cited for Ninh Chu, because the bay keeps working in the summer season.

Getting started

Expect strong wind, gusts, fishing boats and nets, and far less kite infrastructure than a managed teaching lagoon.

Beginners want a school or a supervised launch. Independent riders should find out on the ground which launch is in use and whether anyone is watching the water before they go out.

Typical strength

Around 20-30 knots in the main Phan Rang season. Ninh Chu's own low-season numbers are about 17 knots on average, with 25 knots on plenty of afternoons.

Often strong and rideable, and often gusty, because the air comes into the bay over land. Offshore shifts have been recorded here too.

November to April on the northeast monsoon is the dependable window, usually peaking December to March.

From May to August the bay runs on a southwest thermal that turns up on roughly half the days and tops out around 20 knots, which is why Ninh Chu gets promoted as a summer option when My Hoa and Mui Ne go quiet.

How far the season stretches is disputed: March-September and March-November are both put forward, as is November-August.

Standing depth

Reportedly shallow in the pocket between the rocks and the breakwater, with deeper and choppier water outside it. Two accounts flatly disagree over which of those describes the main riding area, and no measured depth exists for either.

Tides

Small tide, and unlike My Hoa Lagoon it is not what decides your session. No gauge sits on the bay.The nearest published predictions, from Cam Ranh about 35 km up the coast, run from roughly 0.4 m at low water to about 1.9 m on the bigger highs, so under a metre and a half of range, with two highs and two lows on most days.The dry-out over dead coral that gets written about on this coast belongs to the lagoon, not to Ninh Chu.

Wetsuit

Boardshorts/lycra are usually enough in the warm months; a 2 mm shorty or neoprene top is commonly recommended for windy November-March sessions.

Rescue

No rescue service and nothing arranged. As of 2026 no kite school operates on Ninh Chu Beach itself, so there is nobody on the sand watching the water: lessons, gear and organised help sit with the My Hoa Lagoon centres up the coast.

Older descriptions of a Ninh Chu station with a compressor and a restaurant are unconfirmed. Plan on self-rescue and a walk back, and stay in if the wind swings offshore.

Launch

Launch off the sand on the north side of Ninh Chu Bay, around the Ninh Chu Bay Beach Club area. The beach is long, but the kite spot itself is small and gets tight near the rocks and the breakwater.

Rider tips

Do not carry My Hoa's tide and reef habits over here; ask a local school or rider which launch is actually in use.
Pack a small kite for the winter monsoon, because Phan Rang blows harder than Mui Ne.
Watch for fishing nets, and keep off the fishing boats and the local beach crowd.
If the wind swings offshore, stay on the sand unless you have confirmed rescue cover.
Check whether Ninh Chu Bay Beach Club or any Ninh Chu kite station is still running before you count on a compressor, storage, food or rescue.

Fly into Cam Ranh, then take a taxi, a private transfer or a bus down to Phan Rang and Ninh Chu. The train stops at Thap Cham, and the road in from Mui Ne or Ho Chi Minh City works too.
