The spot

Óbidos Lagoon on Portugal's Silver Coast is where the schools of this coast teach, and there are really two spots inside it.

Water types

The very flat sandy estuary at the top, by Bom Sucesso and Foz do Arelho, is the shallow beginner water; the inside lagoon is deeper in places, works through summer, and is the year-round half.

Wind and riding

The wind is the Nortada, usually north to northwest, tightened by the local hills and the shape of the lagoon; southerlies come over land and are less clean. Beginners get shallow, flat, sheltered water, intermediates get freeride, freestyle and foil, and anyone who wants waves drives to the Atlantic side, Baleal or Peniche.

Legal access

The planning detail that catches people is legal access: in 2026 the Capitania restricted all navigation and sliding sports in the lower lagoon from 13 June to 13 September, downstream of the signed line between Foz do Arelho and Bom Sucesso. Outside that zone and that period the inside lagoon is rideable year-round, but check the current signage, school advice and Capitania notices before rigging, because the dates are set annually and most printed pages still carry the old ones.

A 9 m is the all-round size for a 75 kg rider here, inside a 12-9-7 m spread: 12 m for the light thermal afternoons and the shoulder months, 9 m for the usual 15-25 knot Nortada, 7 m when it is properly on.At the top of the 75-85 kg band expect the 9 m to feel thin below about 16 knots, which is a common state of the lagoon in the morning. The practical kite period runs roughly April to November, with the Nortada blowing mainly March to October and most reliably in summer. The estuary and top-of-lagoon area is shut during the bathing season, so May, early June, mid-to-late September and October are the cleaner trip targets for that part of the water. The inside lagoon is open year-round.

Standing depth

Waist-deep over a sandy bottom across the teaching areas, and shallow enough at the top of the lagoon near the ocean mouth that foiling does not work there at all.Reported depths inside the lagoon range from knee-and-waist deep on the banks to 1-2 m across much of the middle, so the standing ground is not continuous - ask which bank the school is on that day.

Tides

The top of the lagoon by the ocean mouth does not work at low tide. The inside lagoon rides on both tides but goes choppier with more current on the high. Current at the mouth increases on the outgoing tide, and navigation through the canal da aberta is prohibited in both directions at any state.

No public rescue service is confirmed for the lagoon. Schools cover their own clients: instructors coach by walkie-talkie from the bank, and a rescue boat appears among some advertised amenities but is not confirmed against any official provider. Independent riders should assume no cover and ask a school directly before counting on one.

Launch

Two main estuary launches exist: Bom Sucesso beach, the safer option because of its wide sandy area, and Foz do Arelho. The inside lagoon launch used by local schools is reached by a short sandy road and gives access to waist-deep flat water.

Closure restrictions

2026: Capitania do Porto de Peniche edital 13/2026 prohibits navigation by any craft, sliding sports included, from 13 June to 13 September 2026 on the part of the Óbidos lagoon downstream of the line from the Cais da Foz do Arelho (39º25.69'N, 009º13.37'W) to the Aldeia dos Pescadores / Bom Sucesso car park (39º25.38'N, 009º13.78'W). Fines run EUR 400 to EUR 2,500 under the 2026 edital.

Annual rules and inside lagoon

The 2024 general harbour notice separately bans navigation through the canal da aberta in both directions and confirms that the bathing-season restriction is set annually, which is why the dates move and why schools and guides still print the older 15 June to 15 September shorthand. The inside lagoon is reported open to kitesurf year-round.

Enforcement and protection

Enforcement of the marked zones is reportedly strict, up to seizure of gear. The lagoon is a protected wetland with birdlife and shellfish gathering, so keep off the marsh edges and clear of anyone working the flats.
