The spot

Prasonisi is the cape at the southern tip of Rhodes, where a sandy tombolo joins the mainland to the Prasonisi islet through the summer and is covered in winter. The draw has always been the two sides: flat water with offshore wind on one, an onshore wave side on the other, a few hundred metres apart. That has changed.

Legal status

As of 2026 kitesurfing is forbidden on the flat-water side, port police patrol it by boat and write tickets, and the wave side, where the kite centre sits, is the normal legal riding area. So plan for onshore wind and 0.5-2 m waves breaking 50-100 m out, which suits confident intermediates upward rather than an independent novice.

Wind and conditions

The Meltemi is the engine and the passage around the islet accelerates it: 15-30 knots in July and August, mornings around 12-15 knots, the real wind arriving about 13:00 and holding to sunset six or seven days a week from June to September. There are no lifeboats on the wave side, so self-rescue is the plan.

Season and logistics

It is remote and seasonal, a few centres and tavernas and small shops with limited rooms, 100 km from the airport, with May-June and September-October giving space and July and August giving the wind.

For a 75 kg rider on a 130x40 twin tip the priority sizes in July and August are 9 m and 7 m, with 12 m, 15 m and 5 m filling the edges; the first three of those cover 80-90% of peak-season days. September reorders it to 9 m, 12 m, 7 m and then 15 m, and May, June and October take the same order because light days are more common even though full-power days still happen.Across Rhodes in 14-25 knots the usual spread is 9-12 m for a heavier rider and 7-10 m for a lighter one; at Prasonisi plan to be a size below that on a real Meltemi day.

Across the reliable June-September window the working average is nearer 5-6 Beaufort, about 17-27 knots, and May and October still produce full-power days.Rhodes-wide summer figures of 14-25 knots understate this cape, which accelerates the Meltemi around the point. An 11-knot annual average drawn from a single May-October 2016 sample is not a usable planning number.

Main season runs May-October. The most reliable period is June-September, with July-August the strongest and busiest; May and October can still deliver strong Meltemi but have more windless days. Prasonisi often reads stronger than northern Rhodes because of local topography.

About 20 m of standing-depth water off the sandy beach, inside a shallow band roughly 10-30 m wide near shore. Past that it drops away. It is a forgiving entry and a safe place to sort a kite out, not a lagoon you can wade across.

There are no lifeboats on the wave side, the side kites are allowed on, the reasoning being that onshore wind carries a rider back to the beach anyway.

National regulations

Greek national kitesurf rules apply on top: nothing before sunrise or after sunset, nothing beyond 1 nautical mile offshore, a 200 m stand-off from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, islets, reefs and buoys, a clear 100 m radius to launch, and no riding above 6 Beaufort unless licensed lifeguards and a motorised rescue craft are present. No municipal beach ordinance text has been confirmed.

Confirm the kite zones with a centre before launching. In 2026 the flat-water side is forbidden to kites and the port police check by boat.
The kite centre is on the wave side, down to the right of the parking area along a path marked with surfboard signs and flags.
Rig around 13:00. Mornings sit at 12-15 knots, which is a gear check or a foil session, not the day.
Bring smaller kites than you would for most Mediterranean spots: 9 m and 7 m are the July and August workhorses, with 12 m for the shoulder months.
Do not leave valuables in a tent or a harness on the sand. Theft from unattended kit is a recurring complaint, and camping on the sandbar is not permitted.
Rent a car and book rooms early for July and August: the airport is 100 km away, on-site beds are few, and the dunes are Natura 2000 and closed to driving and rigging.

A rental car is the practical choice, especially if you sleep outside Prasonisi or want somewhere to go on a no-wind day: about 1 hr 30 min from Rhodes Town, 55 min from Lindos.Taxi fares on Rhodes run at roughly one euro per kilometre and about EUR 25 (2026) for the short hop from the airport to Rhodes Town, but no fixed fare is published for the Prasonisi run and no scheduled shuttle to the spot was found. Agree a price before you get in.

Very limited on-site seasonal accommodation and guesthouses close to the beach; Kite Prasonisi lists Kedros Rooms at the spot and Stari apartments in Kattavia, plus Zanetos Rooms, Lighthouse Boutique Hotel and Oasis Hotel. Kattavia is a nearby village option, and booking early is recommended for high season.

No-wind days

Walk to the Prasonisi lighthouse when the tombolo is passable, swim, snorkel or SUP, eat in Kattavia, drive to Lindos or Rhodes Town, or work through the other Rhodes beaches.
