The spot

Kalavarda is a long open beach on the quiet west coast of Rhodes, north of the better-known Theologos and Fanes kite areas and close to Ancient Kamiros. The summer Meltemi comes in side-shore to side-onshore from the left, usually building after midday and running 20-25 knots through the afternoon. The water is open Aegean: chop and small waves that grow as the wind fills, over sand with pebble sections in places.

June through September is the supported window, with the wider island season running from about April/May to October when things line up.

No official support

Quieter than the serviced Rhodes beaches, which is the point of coming and also the catch. A small beach kite centre and rental reportedly operate here, but nothing official confirms a Kalavarda school and there is no public rescue cover, so a beginner should book instruction at Theologos and never launch here alone.

Hazards and water temperature

A small pier sits downwind to the right, which is worth knowing before you go out on a strong day. Summer water is 24-27 C in boardshorts, winter 17-18 C in a full suit.

A rocky outcrop splits the beach in two. The right-hand section is shallow and calm enough for children but is often carpeted with seaweed; the left-hand section, the one people kite from, has a sand bottom that drops away faster, so standing room there is short. No measured depth.

No lifeguard tower, no rescue boat, no kite-specific cover. This is an unorganised beach - shower, changing room, two taverns, no sunbed concession - so help is whoever else is on the water. Ride with a partner and agree what happens if one of you goes downwind.

Checked 2026: no Kalavarda-specific municipal or port-police kite-zone rule was found.
Greek national kitesurf rules apply island-wide on Rhodes, prohibiting kitesurfing before sunrise/after sunset, on crowded beaches, inside ports/marinas/fishing shelters, and within 200 m of swimmers, the shoreline outside marked bathing buoys, boats or obstacles, and requiring a helmet, quick-release harness, hook knife, life jacket and an isothermal wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May.
General Port Regulation no. 20, in force 2026: riding is banned above force 6 unless a certified lifeguard with a motorised craft is watching, and banned in offshore wind unless someone with a motorised craft is on hand to pick you up.

The rocky outcrop is the marker: the shallow, weedy half beside it is where the swimmers are, the deeper sandy half is the kite side.
Nobody is watching this beach. No lifeguard, no rescue boat, so go out with someone.
Greek rules keep the kite outside the bathing buoys and 200 m off swimmers, and ban riding over force 6 unless a lifeguard with a motorboat is on the beach.

Kalavarda is on the west coast of Rhodes near Ancient Kamiros, roughly 16 km from the airport by road and about 28-30 km from Rhodes Town, with the village centre some 1.5 km inland from the beach. It lies down the coast from Fanes and Theologos, not above them.Bus, taxi or a rental car all work, and a car pays for itself if you want to move between Kalavarda, Fanes, Theologos or Prasonisi.
