The spot

Fanes sits on the northwest coast of Rhodes, south of Theologos and north of Kalavarda, on the same west-coast Meltemi belt. The wind comes in side to side-onshore from NW to W, and the water is open and choppy once it fills in.

Quieter alternative

The beach is wide and much quieter than the Ixia and Ialysos corridor, which is the reason to drive out here rather than stay there. Meltemi Kiteclub runs lessons, rental, storage, launch help and boat rescue on the beach, and the rescue goes with the paid packages rather than with anyone who rigs up.

Independent riding

Riding independently, treat Fanes as a self-sufficient open coast: sand and pebble bottom, a pier downwind on the right, a weak current setting south. The airport is close, which makes this an easy first or last day of a trip.

Rescue

Two operations cover the beach and both tie rescue to paying them. Meltemi Kiteclub bundles boat rescue into its rental, storage and course packages, with 2026 rental at 60 EUR for two hours, 90 EUR a day, 380 EUR a week and storage from 15 EUR a day.

The station at Hotel Delfini runs a safety watch daily 10:00-18:00 with rescue-boat crew on the beach, free to its own guests. Rig your own gear with no package and nobody is committed to coming out for you.

Checked in 2026: Greek national kitesurf rules prohibit kiting before sunrise and after sunset, in adverse weather, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, within 200 m of swimmers or obstacles, and within 200 m of shore except beyond the marked swimmer buoys; launching needs a clear 100 m radius.

Locally the beach is split by buoys into a swimmers' zone and a water-sports zone, and kites belong on the water-sports side.

No Fanes-specific 2026 municipal ordinance was found.
