Kremasti is the working kite spot of north-west Rhodes, just north of Rhodes Diagoras Airport and close to Kremasti village. The wind comes from SW, WSW and W, usually thin in the morning and building after noon as the afternoon thermal stacks onto the Meltemi through the strait between Rhodes and Turkey: 4-6 Bft on an ordinary high-season day, 5-7 Bft when both effects line up.
Water is chop and small waves near shore with open-sea swell farther out, flatter early in a session and rougher as the wind fills. The launch is more work than a lagoon.
The beach is stone and pebble, about 20-25 m wide in places with trees and a small road behind it, and the water entry is limited by buoys that split the kite zone from the swimming zone, so you have to stay upwind of that corridor.
Air Riders Kite Pro Center runs the station and includes jet-ski rescue if you register with them. June through September is the season, with July and August the busiest; spring and autumn northerlies build a shorebreak that is no place for a first week.

Typical strength

Frequent summer wind, strengthened by the jet effect in the strait between Rhodes and Turkey and by the afternoon thermal. Spring and autumn wind is less regular and can blow harder.
High season runs June to mid-September, sometimes given as June-September. Spring/autumn Tramontana or northerly conditions can create larger shorebreak and are not recommended for beginners.

The quiver, in words

No local quiver log; indicative for a 75-85 kg rider. A 4 Bft morning is a 12 m. The ordinary 5 Bft afternoon is 9-10 m.On the 6-7 Bft days, when the thermal adds to the Meltemi, 7 m and a smaller board. Centres on the beach rent a full range, so you can change kite mid-session rather than commit at 11:00.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

open sea

Standing depth

The accounts disagree and neither is measurable from here. About 15 m of shallow water out from the shore is reported, and the beginner beach the centres use is described as shallow and flat; other riders describe a very narrow standing area with the bottom dropping away fast from the sand. Plan on little standing room until you have walked it.

Tides

No meaningful tide; tide independent.

Temperature

25.5°C summer · 18.5°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or lycra in summer; wetsuit in spring and autumn; long wetsuit in winter.

18–28°C water
Clear open-sea water with chop and small waves: smaller waves near the shore, open-sea swell farther out, flatter early in a Meltemi session and choppier as the wind builds.

Your level

Beginner through expert is listed, and local schools teach there, but the small stone launch, buoyed water entry, quick depth change and shorebreak on some winds make supervision important for beginners.

Rules & access
As of 2025 Kremasti has kite zones and the water entry is limited by buoys separating the kite and swimming areas. Under the 2026 national regulation summary, kitesurfing is prohibited inside designated crowded bathing beaches, before sunrise or after sunset, within 200 m of bathers and many other obstacles, inside port, marina or fishing-shelter areas, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, and near airport approach and departure paths unless the locally agreed distances are met.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Bring booties or water shoes: rocks and sea urchins are both reported here.
  • Register at Air Riders Kite Pro Center if you want the jet-ski rescue to cover you.
  • Be sure of your upwind before leaving the lesson zone, because the buoyed entry is the only way back in.
  • For flatter water ride early or late, not at the peak of the afternoon.
  • One kite for a week here is a 9 or 10 m, with the option to rent down to 7 m on the big thermal afternoons.
