The spot

The beach

The kite reference here is Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara, the long black-sand beach on the north side of Ribeira Grande, not anything in the town itself. It is São Miguel's main surf beach first: shifting beach-break peaks, exposed to N/NW Atlantic swell, busy with surfers and bodyboarders whenever it is on. As a kite spot it is selective and intermediate at best, with chop, swell, shorebreak, current, all of it asking for judgement rather than enthusiasm.

North-sector wind is onshore to cross-on for this north-facing coast; south wind is offshore, good for the surfers and bad for you.

Launch and rules

There is a big sandy launch and normal beach services in season, but no kite school on the sand and no kite rescue. The 2026 guarded bathing season brings swimmers and zoning, so check what is allowed before you rig.

Shallow enough to stand near the shore over the sandbars, but not dependably. The bars reshuffle after every storm and the shorebreak lands exactly where you would be standing, so the walk in and out is the part that costs people gear.

Rescue

Lifeguards cover the beach through the 1 June to 30 September 2026 bathing season. There is no kite rescue at any point in the year. Outside the season, plan on self-rescue with a partner watching from the sand; emergencies go to 112.

Launch

Launch off the long black-sand beach at Praia do Areal de Santa Bárbara, clear of swimmers, surfers, the beach bars, the access paths and any guarded bathing area. The beach runs about 1 km with parking, showers, toilets and lifeguards in the bathing season. No kite corridor has been confirmed.

Azores Decreto Regulamentar Regional n.º 9/2025/A prohibits non-motorized nautical sports inside the associated bathing water during that season, unless a specific multi-use plan or a signposted access channel applies.

No Santa Bárbara kite channel or kite permit has turned up in what has been checked.

Do not launch inside or upwind of the guarded bathing area during the 2026 bathing season unless the authorities confirm a kite channel.
Treat a south wind as straight offshore on this north-facing beach; fine for surf, not for kiting without boat support.
Give the surfers and bodyboarders the peaks. This is their beach.
If the swell is big or the shorebreak is dumping, drive to another São Miguel beach and write the session off.
