Safety Bay (The Pond)

The Pond is the sheltered inner corner of Safety Bay near Rockingham, about 45 minutes south of Perth, protected by a long sandbank that keeps the water flat for hundreds of metres. Regular thermal sea breezes (S-SW) make it one of the most reliable flat-water venues in Australia, and its combination of shallow, glassy water and strong afternoon wind has made it a freestyle mecca that hosts world-class kiteboarders and competitions.

notesExcellent for learning kite control and first water starts thanks to the shallow, flat, protected water, though sources differ on whether true first-timers should go here - Kiteboarding WA notes riders who can't yet go upwind should avoid peak times, while schools do run beginner lessons on-site. Flat water and strong wind make it a favourite for intermediate/advanced freestyle.
