Sandy Hook Bayside is the Raritan Bay side of the Sandy Hook unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, reached from Lot B: park, carry the gear across the road, and launch off the sandbar at low tide across from the end of the lot. It is New Jersey's busiest bay-side kite spot.
NW is the best direction and SE works too, though N, S and SSW come up as well, and the cove throws a wind shadow on some angles.
The water is protected and runs flat to choppy, waist deep at low tide, but the tide range is around 4-5 ft and the current can pull a lost board toward the inlet, which is the reason this is not a learning beach. Spring and autumn are the seasons riders actually name: March-May and September-December.
Summer means beachgoers, a full Lot B on any decent weekend, and water near 23°C; late winter means 3°C and a 5/4 or 6/5/4 hooded suit with boots and gloves.
Bay-side riding runs year-round, but the ocean side is a separate rule set, closed through spring, summer and autumn and open after September 15 and in winter, and kite flying is prohibited on the lifeguarded swimming beaches while they are guarded.

Typical strength

No kiteable range is published for the bay side. The long-run station record on the Hook averages about 10 kt with average gusts near 13 kt over 2007-2026, which is a whole-year mean including the calm days rather than a session figure.

Strong regional wind reputation, but the cove is direction-sensitive and shadows badly on some angles.
Spring and autumn carry the best wind: March-May and September-December are the listed best months. Both thermal and frontal wind.

Direction to shore

Northwest through north is the band the bay launch works on, and the cove blankets part of it, so get out past the shadow before you judge the strength. Southeast comes in more side-shore.South and southwest arrive over the Atlantic Highlands and land around 3 mph under what the meter reads, and readings from northeast through southeast belong to the ocean side rather than to the cove. Off the map the bay shore at the cove faces about due west, which is what makes a northwest day arrive cross-onshore.

Dominant direction

NW is the best direction and SE is usable; N, S and SSW also come up, and NW is common.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

bay

Standing depth

Waist-deep at low tide; otherwise shallow flat/chop conditions.

Tides

Roughly 4-5 ft of tide; the mean tidal range measured at the Sandy Hook station is 4.7 ft.

Temperature

23°C summer · 3°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer can be without a wetsuit or with a light top/shorty depending on wind; spring and autumn need wetsuits; late winter requires a 5/4 or 6/5/4 hooded winter suit with boots and gloves.

Currents

Tidal and inlet currents can be strong and can pull boards toward the inlet; currents in the channel are also flagged.

5–25°C water
Protected bay/cove riding with flat water, chop and sandbar shallows near Lot B; water can be semi-clean to poor after rain.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Marked non-beginner. Every listed New Jersey launch on this stretch needs independent upwind riding, self launching and landing, and upwind body dragging, and Sandy Hook adds a current that can take a board to the inlet. Beginner-suitable claims exist for certain wind directions but are unconfirmed.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue. Lifeguards cover only the designated swimming beaches, and only from 10:00 to 18:00 in season; the bay cove is unguarded at all times. Park emergencies and anyone in trouble with no lifeguard on the beach go to Gateway dispatch on (718) 354-4700.

Launch

Park at Lot B and carry gear across the road to the bay-side cove; the sandbar across from the end of Lot B is the launch at low tide. Windsurfers use the water across from Lot C.Riders call the place simply Sandy Hook, and the bay side and the ocean side are two different rule sets on the same spit. The wind meter the locals read sits on the Sea Gull's Nest at Lot D, so it matches the cove only on northwest through north.

Hazards riders report 11

  • strong tide/current
  • summer beachgoers
  • inlet current can pull boards away
  • rocks or powerlines (unconfirmed)
  • boats
  • wavebreakers
  • wind shadow and turbulence in some directions
  • parking can be limited on nice summer weekends
  • The entrance closes to recreational traffic once the roughly 4,200 beach parking spaces fill.
  • Ocean beaches carry public-use closures from 15 March to 15 September for piping plover, and kiteboarding has to stay 650 feet clear of any posted nesting area.
  • South and southwest come over the Atlantic Highlands and land a few knots under the meter reading.
Rules & access
2026: under the Gateway National Recreation Area superintendent's compendium, kiteboarding is allowed except within 650 feet of a posted shorebird nesting area or of a lifeguarded swimming beach. Sandy Hook is open 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. All permitted activities on the ocean beaches are subject to public-use closures from 15 March to 15 September for piping plover. Kite flying is a separate rule from kiteboarding and is banned on the Sandy Hook ocean-side beaches from 15 March to 15 September, in parking areas, and on any lifeguarded beach while guards are on duty. Alcohol is prohibited across the whole of Sandy Hook, glass containers on every beach bay side and ocean side, smoking on the beaches, and drones anywhere in the park. Beach parking is charged from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and the park takes no cash.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Use Lot B, and keep the ocean-side restrictions separate from the bay-side launch rules.
  • Check the tide state and the current before you launch; a board lost near the inlet is hard to get back.
  • On north wind, get clear of the cove's wind shadow before you judge the strength.
  • Arrive early on a good summer weekend, the lot fills when the beach weather and the wind line up.
  • Late winter needs a 5/4 or 6/5/4 hooded suit with boots and gloves, not a spring suit.
  • South and southwest blow over the Atlantic Highlands and land under the meter; the further north you go on the Hook, the longer the fetch and the closer the reading.
  • Stay 650 feet clear of any posted shorebird nesting area and of any lifeguarded swimming beach, which is where the kiteboarding rule bites.
  • Nobody is guarding the cove. If something goes wrong the number is Gateway dispatch, (718) 354-4700.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Sandy Hook Bayside?

Spring and fall bring the most consistent wind, with March through May and September through December listed as the best months, driven by thermal and frontal patterns.

Is Sandy Hook Bayside suitable for beginners?

No. All listed New Jersey launch sites require independent upwind riding and launching, and strong tidal currents can pull boards toward the inlet, so it is rated intermediate and advanced.

What is the wind like?

Northwest is considered the best direction, with southeast also usable, though wind shadows and direction sensitivity are reported around the cove.

Are there rules or restrictions?

As of 2026, bay-side riding is allowed year-round, but ocean-side kiteboarding at Sandy Hook is restricted during spring, summer and fall and only permitted after September 15 and in winter.
