Watch Hill

also known as Sandy Point, Napatree Point

Nearby Ninigret Pond 17 km · Napeague (Lazy Point) 39 km · straight-line distance

Watch Hill has two faces: the ocean side, and the bay side of Little Narragansett Bay around Napatree and Sandy Point. Which one you ride decides your shore angle for the day, and no two sessions here start from the same place. SW to W are the directions that work, thermal or frontal, with spring and fall the strongest seasons.
Water is flat to choppy with small-to-medium waves. Tide independent is not the same as safe: Sandy Point is a shifting set of sandspits with channels between them, and the island itself keeps changing shape. Summer brings swimmers and boat traffic to a resort beach, with bystanders on the sand, and the walk from parking gets long in June-August.
Parking is about $15 all day (2026) in a small lot, free off season. Intermediate and expert riders only, and the launch itself is the unresolved part: no official kite page exists for Watch Hill or Sandy Point, and whether you can drive and walk in or need a boat out to Sandy Point depends on which access riders are using this season.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

  • Leave beginners at home; the documented level is intermediate to expert.
  • Come off season if you can: shorter walk to the water, and the parking is free (2026).
