Yes, over a long shallow shelf: waist-deep water runs out to roughly 300 m before a sandbank, and it goes deep immediately behind that bank.On the swim-beach side the marker line stops where the bottom reaches 0.5 m, about 90 m out, and the slope is gentle for the first 10 m from shore before steepening.Municipal works are bringing the recreational water in front of the beach to about 1.40 m, which will change how much of that shelf stays standing depth.

Not tidal. The IJsselmeer is held at a target level of 0.20 m below NAP in summer and 0.40 m below NAP in winter, so what moves the water line is wind set-up and lake management, not a tide table.

Little current: the IJsselmeer flows only as much as the wind pushes it, and the dominant wind is southwest. The marina fairway runs about 400 m off the beach and a boat launch sits at the southern point, so the traffic to watch is boats rather than tide.

Sandy beach plus a grass rigging area at MarinaPark Beach Resort Soal. Launching and landing must happen in or near the water. There is grass and beach to rig on, but when it is busy the water is the safer place to put a kite up.

- Filter on west-sector forecasts first: S-SW-W-NW-N is the usable range at Workum.
- Skip any wind with east in it. It is offshore here and the open IJsselmeer is downwind of you; the schools move spot when it turns east.
- Foilers, walk out past the sandbank before you start. It goes deep the moment you are behind it.
- Rig on the grass or the sand, but launch and land in or near the water, which is what the local rule set requires.
- Arrive early on summer weekends and school-holiday days, because the beach and the lesson zone saturate fast.
- If the red flag goes up on a busy day, kiting stops until the zone thins out. Plan a lunch, not an argument.
- Check the 2026-2027 It Soal works and the on-site signs before assuming the usual launch layout is open.
- Bring cold-water gear outside high summer: the IJsselmeer is around 17 C in September and about 10 C in April.
- Stay 60 m off the beach when you ride or jump, and keep clear of the marina fairway about 400 m out.

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main international option; Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) is geographically closer but less useful for most international arrivals.

By car, drive to Workum/It Soal on the Friesland IJsselmeer coast and park at/near the waterfront parking. By public transport, trains from Schiphol to Workum require at least one change and take roughly 3 hours on the fastest services; the beach is outside the town centre, so plan a bike, taxi or local transfer for gear.
