External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Berck-sur-Mer and Stella-Plage sit on the Cote d'Opale between Le Touquet and Boulogne, with one of Europe's widest sand beaches at low tide and a genuine kite culture — Berck hosts the continent's biggest kite-flying festival, not just kitesurfing.
It suits riders who want big flat low-tide space, easy train access from Paris, and a real (if unglamorous) French seaside town rather than a resort; it does not suit anyone expecting nightlife, since Stella-Plage in particular is a quiet, family-oriented satellite of the livelier Le Touquet next door.

Good to know before you go2

  • Berck's low-tide flat water turns to open sea with chop and current at high tide — plan sessions on the tide table, not just the wind forecast.
  • Northeast wind doesn't work at Berck; the local school's fallback is Wissant, about 45 minutes away by car.

    More on Berck-sur-Mer (Grande Plage)

At low water the sea goes out 2-3 km and leaves a sand plain with flat baïnes in it, which is where the schools teach and where the freestyle and speed crowd ride. Come back at high tide and it is a different beach: open Channel chop with small waves, a shorebreak and some current on the ebb. Not a beginner state. The wind is synoptic, anything from south through west to north; west and south-west are the honest open-sea directions, full south is side-off, and a north wind arrives chopped up by the seafront buildings, so check the Fort-Mahon readings before you trust the local ones. October to March gets the most wind, but there is no month it does not work when a front comes through, and the water is 16-19 C in summer, so it is a 3/2 or 4/3 with boots even in August. In July and August the town-centre bathing beach is off limits and kites go in the zone d'évolution sportive on the Côte d'Opale side of town. The mussel park north of town dries out at low tide, marked by a large yellow buoy, and you do not want to find it at speed.

    Getting on the water

Kilometres of fine sand on Grande Plage. Park at Parking Terminus or Parking Saint-Nicolas; which one depends on the wind direction that day.

    If it goes wrong

There is no kite rescue. The Protection Civile lifeguards, about 17 nageurs-sauveteurs, cover the town-centre bathing beach from 1 July to 31 August 2026 and are there for swimmers; out in the zone d'évolution sportive you are on the normal emergency services.

    Room to rig

Huge at low tide; at high tide there is reportedly still 300-400 m of sand between the water and the dyke.

    Rules and access

2026: Berck's municipal beach-surveillance order sets a zone d'évolution sportive from 1 June to 30 September, running from the 'OASI' dune to the extension of Avenue du Docteur Quettier, where swimming is prohibited and sport/kite activity is directed instead, flanked by 30 m buffer zones on each side over the same 1 June-30 September period. Separate swimming-prohibited zones run 15 June-15 September to the north (rue Saint Charles to the north communal limit, due to a dangerous tarp and mussel farm) and at the Baie d'Authie to the south. Kiters should stay within the zone d'évolution sportive and its buffers and avoid the town-centre supervised bathing beach in July-August.

  2. Stella-Plage

    open sea beach

Stella-Plage is the quiet stretch of the Cote d'Opale between Le Touquet and Berck: one long fine-sand Channel beach that runs into Merlimont to the south, ridden by locals who want the same wind as the big resorts without the crowd.

Stella-Plage: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Stella-Plage

It faces west, so W is onshore, SW and NW side-on and E offshore. In light wind the water is flat; when it picks up a wave bar builds and it turns into a wave spot. The tide is the whole logistics problem. The Channel range here is large, the sand you rig on at low water is gone at high water, and the banks move within a session, so read the table before you drive down. Nobody has published a wind range for this beach, there is no rescue on record and no Stella-specific kite bylaw, only the 2024 national rules for the 300 m band, so the intermediate tag is a single difficulty rating and not much more. Kitecamp62 and the Kabana Kite Association are the local contacts. Stay clear of the bathing areas in July and August; Le Touquet and Wissant are the better-documented spots up the coast.

    Getting on the water

Sandy beachfront at Stella-Plage, between Berck and Le Touquet and running on into Merlimont. Rigging space depends strongly on tide; high water narrows the beach hard. The local kite association is based on the north beach, away from the supervised bathing box that occupies 440 m of the central frontage in July and August.

    If it goes wrong

Supervised bathing only, and only in high summer. In 2026 the marked zone ran 1 July to 30 August, 11:00 to 19:00, staffed by CRS lifeguards and civil MNS under the beach service shared with Sainte-Cecile, Le Touquet and Merlimont. The box is 440 m wide, marked by a rectangular red-and-yellow flag at each end on the sand and by yellow spherical buoys out to 300 m from the shore. Outside those dates and hours the water is unwatched and the public swims at its own risk. Sea rescue is VHF channel 16 or 196 by phone.

    Rules and access

Under the 2024 national rules, coastal kitesurfing is governed by local arrangements inside the 300 m band and otherwise by Division 240, daylight hours and the 2 nautical mile limit; no Stella-Plage kite-specific municipal rule is published. What is fixed on the ground: in 2026 the supervised bathing zone ran 1 July to 30 August, 11:00 to 19:00, 440 m wide, flagged red and yellow at both ends and buoyed with yellow spheres to 300 m offshore. Keep out of it while it is in place.

SafetyAt Berck, low tide opens vast flat baines (tidal pools) good for beginners, but at high tide the same beach turns to open sea with chop, small waves, shorebreak and current — check the tide before committing to a session. Berck's kite school treats northeast wind as unrideable there and sends riders to Wissant, about 45 minutes away, instead.

What riders say

7 recurring claims

  1. The water is cold enough that wetsuit thickness is a running conversation here, and the shorty only comes out once the sea passes about 16 degrees in high summer.

    consensus×4 riders

  2. This works as a drive-to weekend coast rather than a trip: the people talking about it live inland, in Belgium or in Paris and count the hours in the car.

    consensus×4 riders

  3. The local school comes out well in customer write-ups — safety and the instructor by name are what get praised — with one strongly negative account standing against the rest.

    majority×7 riders

  4. The tide, not the wind, is what catches people out — the ebb pulls hard and the currents around the bay mouths are strong, and a beginner or shaky intermediate has no business being out on a falling tide in winter.

    majority×3 riders

  5. The April kite festival is what most outsiders know Berck for, and it brings a crowd that has nothing to do with kitesurfing.

    majority×3 riders

  6. Learning here is harder than the wide-beach pictures suggest, because the shorebreak keeps knocking the board away during water starts.

    majority×2 riders

  7. The water is usually empty and the beach is not — at low tide the sand belongs to land yachts, buggies, speed-sail and kite-dirt, and the width of it is what keeps everyone out of each other's way.

Rencontres Internationales de Cerfs-Volants, Berck-sur-Mer, 18–26 April 2026

History & trivia

Scene & life

Berck-sur-Mer's Rencontres Internationales de Cerfs-Volants is one of Europe's largest kite-flying gatherings — the 2026 edition runs 18–26 April as its 39th/40th edition (sources disagree on the exact count) with the theme "Le sport".

Itinerary idea

Base in Berck for the beach and the kite scene, day-trip to Le Touquet for food and evening life, and check Stella-Plage as a quieter alternative if Berck feels too built-up.

FAQ

Is Pas-de-Calais suitable for beginners?

Yes, particularly at Berck-sur-Mer's Grande Plage, where the sea can retreat 2-3 km at low tide and leave broad flat baïnes that are useful for learning as well as freeride, freestyle and speed.

What wind directions work?

Stella-Plage is exposed to the dominant southwest, west and northwest winds off the Channel, with flat water in lighter wind turning more wave-oriented as it builds.

3 questions

What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.

  • Is 'Pas-de-Calais' the name riders actually use for this area?
  • What does a bed cost at Berck or Stella-Plage, and where do riders eat and meet?
  • Whether Stella-Plage has any nightlife of its own versus depending entirely on Le Touquet is unconfirmed.
