External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

This is a stretch of the Taranto Ionian coast, not one resort: three kite spots running from Marina di Lizzano's reef wave breaks through Lido Gandoli's beach-break surf to the flatter, more approachable Viale del Tramonto right at Taranto's San Vito suburb.
It's workaday southern Puglia — Taranto city carries an industrial-crisis reputation alongside its ancient-Greek and seafood identity — rather than a polished Salento kite-resort scene, and suits riders comfortable driving a spread-out coastline and matching spot to conditions, not someone who wants one beach with everything on it.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • Marina di Lizzano's reef breaks (Il Parcheggio, Il Curvone) are not a beginner beach — treat it as a wave spot for intermediate-plus riders.
  • At Lido Gandoli, wind above about 25 knots turns the waves disorganized rather than better.
  • The three spots span roughly 25km of coast with different personalities (reef wave, beach-break surf, flat freeride) — check which matches the day's wind/swell rather than defaulting to one.

The spots

  1. Marina di Lizzano

    sea

Marina di Lizzano is a wave spot on the Ionian coast south of Taranto, and the two names you will hear are Il Parcheggio and Il Curvone, reef peaks that come alive on SE and S swell.

Marina di Lizzano: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Marina di Lizzano

On the days it is worth the drive the waves run medium to big. Tide is irrelevant here. Both accesses give a medium launch and landing area, and the usable wind sits in the SE to SW sector, Scirocco included. Beginners should stay away: reef under the peaks, an exposed stretch of sea, no rescue of any kind on record, and entry that gets difficult once the wind goes past 25 knots. What is unresolved is the legal side in the Puglia bathing season, because no corridor authorization is published for these exact accesses. April, May and September through December are the months named as best, though other guidance stretches the season across the whole April-December span.

    Getting on the water

Il Parcheggio is about 10 km south of Pulsano. Il Curvone sits below a left-hand uphill bend roughly 2 km after Onda Blu on the coastal road. Both have a medium-size launch and landing area.

    If it goes wrong

No lifeguard post, rescue boat or kite-specific cover is on record at either access. In an emergency the numbers are 112 and the free coastguard line 1530; the Taranto coastguard operations room answers on 099 4713611. Plan the session around self-rescue.

    Rules and access

2025: kiting on this stretch is governed by the boating regulation of the Taranto maritime district, Ordinanza 141 of 13/05/2025 of the Capitaneria di Porto di Taranto. Riding is allowed in daylight only, from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, further out than 200 m from the shore and no more than one nautical mile off it. During the regional bathing season, launching and landing must happen inside an authorized corridor: 30 m wide at the waterline, widening to 80 m at the 100 m mark and holding that width out to 200 m, edged by orange buoys, with the two seaward buoys and a sign on the shoreline marked RISERVATO AL TRANSITO KITESURF. You body-drag the first 100 m, one rider at a time in that stretch, and riders coming in have priority. Minimum age is 16. A lifejacket is compulsory at all times whatever the distance from shore, and you must carry a line cutter and a working quick release. 2026: Regione Puglia Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026 sets the regional bathing season from 23 May to 13 September and leaves the provision of public launch corridors to the coastal municipalities. No corridor has been confirmed at Il Parcheggio or Il Curvone, which leaves launching in bathing season legally unresolved here.

Lido Gandoli: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Lido Gandoli

It works on active swell from the SE, S and SW quadrant, which in practice means autumn and winter, and Scirocco is the named wind. Sandy bottom, good water quality, and a beach break rather than a flat-water school lagoon. Over about 25 knots the waves go disorganized and getting off the beach turns awkward. Nobody has published usable monthly wind averages here and there is no best-month list, so this is a spot you check the day before rather than book a week around. Not a place to learn; the nearest kite club, ASD Kitesurf Taranto, is up the coast. Summer water is 26.9 C, winter 13.8 C. The Puglia bathing ordinance for 2026 reserves the sea up to 200 m from beaches and low rocks, and 100 m from cliffs, for swimmers from 23 May to 13 September 2026, and no Gandoli-specific launch corridor has been found.

    Getting on the water

Gandoli sits in a small bay below the Litoranea Salentina, on the beach to the right of the Il Capriccio restaurant, about 20 minutes by car south of Taranto. A long-standing beach establishment holds the sand: umbrellas and loungers, bar, pizzeria and restaurant on terraces above, and a lift down to the beach.

    If it goes wrong

No kite rescue. Between 23 May and 13 September 2026 the beach concessions are required to run a working rescue and first-aid service under the regional bathing ordinance, and that is what covers the water in front of the lido. Outside those dates, which is when the spot actually works, there is nobody: 112 reaches the emergency chain, and the local kite club can be raised on +39 327 5464234.

    Room to rig

Rigging room is whatever the beach establishment leaves. Through the bathing season the sand in front is laid out with umbrellas and loungers; in the autumn and winter swell season, when the spot works, it is empty. No measured width has been published.

    Rules and access

2026: Regione Puglia Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026 approves the regional bathing ordinance. From 23 May to 13 September 2026 the sea area up to 200 m from beaches or low rocks and 100 m from cliffs is ordinarily reserved for bathing unless the maritime authority sets different limits; launch corridors are governed by competent maritime-authority ordinances and, for public use, must be arranged by coastal municipalities.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 10.7 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Viale del Tramonto / San Vito: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Viale del Tramonto / San Vito

Viale del Tramonto at San Vito is Taranto's own spot: north and northeast plus northwest, 15 to 35 knots, season running April through October. Rocks and stones sit on the bottom, so walk your entry line before riding close to shore. In August the swimmers take the beach and cars pass close enough that a lofted kite has somewhere bad to go. Skip that month. The 2026 Puglia bathing ordinance governs the summer and nobody has published a San Vito launch corridor, so ask locally which water is legal before you rig. Kitesurf Taranto and ASD Kitesurf Taranto teach in town, and on a clean flat day this is a fair place to learn.

    Getting on the water

Medium sandy beach on Viale del Tramonto, with road and parking immediately next to the launch.

    If it goes wrong

No lifeguard cover and no club rescue boat are confirmed for this beach. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the national number for an emergency at sea, answered by the coastguard. The two Taranto clubs are the only realistic help on the water and neither publishes a rescue service.

    Rules and access

2026: Regione Puglia Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026 approves the regional bathing ordinance. From 23 May to 13 September 2026 the sea up to 200 m from beaches or low rocks and 100 m from cliffs is ordinarily reserved for bathing, unless the maritime authority sets different limits. Launch corridors follow the competent maritime-authority ordinance and, for public use, have to be arranged by the coastal municipality. No spot-specific rule has been published for San Vito; talk to the locals before you go on the water.

Getting there & around

  • Bari–Karol Wojtyła Airport, roughly 100km north of Taranto, is the closest major airport.
  • Brindisi's Aeroporto del Salento (a Ryanair base) is a regional option elsewhere in Puglia; no source confirms its distance to Taranto specifically.
Car neededYes — the three spots span roughly 25km of coast, and moving between them (or reaching any of them from Taranto center) needs a car.
TransfersThe coastal SP121 Litoranea Salentina and local provincial roads (SP100, SP102) connect Taranto to Leporano/Lido Gandoli and on to Pulsano/Marina di Lizzano. There is no organized kite transfer service.

SafetyAt Lido Gandoli, wind over roughly 25 knots is noted as making the waves disorganized rather than better. Marina di Lizzano is explicitly framed as a big-wave spot for intermediate-and-stronger riders, not a beginner beach.Taranto city itself carries an official 'area of complex industrial crisis' designation (2012) tied to its steel plant — worth knowing as city context rather than a beach hazard.
Seasons beyond windLido Gandoli's best conditions run autumn and winter with south-quadrant swell; Viale del Tramonto's season is given as April through October. Puglia's regional bathing-season ordinance is renewed annually — check the current year's version for beach-access rules.

What riders say

4 recurring claims

  1. This stretch is not one uniform beach: Lizzano is reported as the wave/intermediate option, while Viale del Tramonto is the flatter San Vito option.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Taranto was founded by Spartan colonists in 706 BC and was Sparta's only colony on the Italian peninsula.
  • Local tradition dates Lizzano's founding to 1208, credited to a countess Albiria, though the date is considered uncertain.
  • Leporano's coastal trench is tied by local tradition to the 706 BC founding fleet of Phalanthus, legendary founder of Taras/Taranto.
  • San Vito traces to a small church donated to Greek monks by Taranto's archbishop in the early 12th century; the monastery that grew there was destroyed by Turkish raids in the late 16th century.

Itinerary idea

Base centrally (Leporano or San Vito/Taranto) and drive to whichever of the three spots matches the day's wind direction and swell — don't expect one beach to cover every condition.
