On the clock
11:00 · 14:00 · 17:00
Two different days. On the autumn and winter swell days the wind is synoptic and blows around the clock, so the time you rig is your own business. In summer the only usable wind is a sea breeze that builds after about 11:00 and peaks between 14:00 and 17:00. Indicative, from modelled hourly wind with no local measurement.
The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

fills in: Two different days.
Typical strength
The wind is on the autumn and winter side of the year: 12 knots or more in roughly 13-18 per cent of hours from November through March, against 2-3 per cent in June, July and August. Above about 25 knots the waves lose their shape and the entry is the hard part. Indicative, from modelled hourly wind rather than a station on the beach.
The quiver, in words
Indicative for 75-85 kg, with no local kit survey published: 12-14 m on a 12-15 knot day, 9-10 m at 18-22 knots, 7-8 m when a scirocco pushes past 25 knots - at which point the shorebreak entry, not the kite, is the problem.
Direction to shore
The beach faces roughly south. S is straight onshore, SE and SW come in side-onshore from the left and the right, and E is cross-shore and starts to blow off the land. Derived from the coastline orientation, not from a published table.
Dominant direction
SE, S and SW

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

On your own
Room to launch: Rigging room is whatever the beach establishment leaves. Through the bathing season the sand in front is laid out with umbrellas and loungers; in the autumn and winter swell season, when the spot works, it is empty. No measured width has been published.

Rescue
Launch
Gandoli sits in a small bay below the Litoranea Salentina, on the beach to the right of the Il Capriccio restaurant, about 20 minutes by car south of Taranto. A long-standing beach establishment holds the sand: umbrellas and loungers, bar, pizzeria and restaurant on terraces above, and a lift down to the beach.

Rider tips
- Check whether an authorized launch corridor is active before riding between 23 May and 13 September 2026.
- Come for a south-quadrant swell in autumn or winter; there is no daily thermal to rescue the trip.
- Look at the sea before you rig once it is over 25 knots, because the entry is the hard part.
- Scout the access yourself: the directions end at a restaurant, not at a kite centre.
- Come for a south-quadrant swell in autumn or winter; there is no daily thermal to rescue the trip, and summer here barely blows.

- Ride with someone in the cold months. The rescue service on this beach exists only inside the bathing season.

FAQ
When is the best time to kite at Lido Gandoli?
Autumn and winter are best, when active south-quadrant swells from SE, S or SW produce ridable waves.
Is it suitable for beginners?
No, the spot needs active swell and entry becomes difficult once wind exceeds about 25 knots, so it is not verified as a beginner spot.
What is the water like?
It is a sandy-bottom beach break with good water quality, though waves become disorganized above roughly 25 knots.
Are there rules to know?
In the 2026 Puglia bathing season, from 23 May to 13 September, the sea up to 200 m from the beach is reserved for bathing outside authorized launch corridors.
