Campomarino di Maruggio sits on the Ionian side of Puglia, in the province of Taranto, and it is a Scirocco spot before it is anything else. When the SE fills in it arrives more decisively here than at the flat-water beaches around Torre Lapillo and Porto Cesareo, and the waves form without getting big.
That places it with intermediate freeride, jumping and a first strapless attempt, not with a first lesson off the beach. The Ionian Salento seabed is shallow in general, but a standing-depth area at Campomarino is unconfirmed and no typical wind range has been published.
Protected dunes sit behind the beach and umbrellas cover it in July and August, so settle the launch question before you travel: Puglia's 2026 bathing ordinance applies, approved with Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026, and no Campomarino kite corridor is published.
For July and August this stretch of Ionian coast is reportedly less dependable than the Adriatic alternatives.

Typical strength

14 to 22 kt is the band quoted for freeride conditions across Puglia between April and November, with stronger and gustier winter disturbances on top. Regional, not measured at Campomarino, and Scirocco days here are reported to arrive at the firmer end of it.

Scirocco comes in more decisively than at the flatter Salento spots, and the waves form without getting excessive.
Puglia runs on spring-to-autumn thermals plus stronger winter disturbances, and Campomarino is the Scirocco address in that pattern; the climate makes the coast usable from late April through October.
July and August are the weak link: experienced Ionian riders describe the wind in those two months as unknowable and skip them, and the same stretch is reportedly less dependable then than the Adriatic side.

The quiver, in words

No local reporting exists. Worked back from the 14-22 kt regional band, a 75-85 kg rider sits on 9 m to 12 m for most spring-to-autumn sessions and drops towards 7 m when Scirocco is at the top of its range. Indicative and derived, not measured here.

Direction to shore

SE Scirocco is the working wind; the exact shore angle at the usual launch is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

The Ionian Salento coast generally has shallow seabeds, but an exact standing-depth area at Campomarino is unconfirmed.

Tides

Effectively nothing to plan around. The nearest Ionian reference port runs a semidiurnal range of roughly 0.2 m, so water level is not part of the session and wind and swell move the shoreline far more than the tide does. Regional figure, no measurement at this beach.

Temperature

26.9°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a thin top in peak summer. A full suit in winter matches Maruggio sea temperatures, though no spot-specific guidance exists.

Rescue

No lifeguard post and no kite rescue is confirmed on this beach. For an emergency at sea the numbers are 112 and the free coastguard line 1530. The competent maritime office is the Taranto district; the Brindisi bathing ordinance that circulates for Puglia covers the Adriatic coast between Fasano and Torchiarolo and does not reach here.

Launch

A wide Ionian beach in front of Campomarino, on a nine-kilometre coast running from the Torre Ovo headland towards Torre Borraco, with dunes and Mediterranean scrub behind it. Campomarino harbour sits on the same stretch, a 350 m breakwater sheltering a fishing basin and a marina, and it is the only port between Porto Cesareo and Taranto.Riders use the water straight off the sand; no official launch point is marked.

Rules & access
2026: Regione Puglia approved the regional bathing ordinance with Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026; use of the beach and the water in front of it during the bathing season depends on authorized corridors and the local maritime authority's rules. Under the Puglia maritime-district model a kite launch corridor exists only where the competent territorial body has authorized it: the corridor is buoyed, the strip of sand in front of it is roped off with posts and lines, and it carries a bilingual sign reserving the area for kite manoeuvring and closing it to bathers. No such authorized corridor exists at Campomarino. The ordinance most often cited for this is the Capitaneria di Porto di Brindisi bathing ordinance, which applies only from Fasano to Torchiarolo on the Adriatic side; Campomarino di Maruggio sits in the Taranto maritime district and its own bathing ordinance is not published. The coast is loggerhead nesting ground, so stay off the dunes and off marked nests.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Target Scirocco days; SE is the direction that makes the drive worth it.
  • Call a Taranto or Salento kite school before you rig in July or August, because no corridor has been confirmed here.
  • Stay off the dunes and out of the swimming zones.
  • Bring a car: moving between the Taranto Ionian spots without one does not work.
  • Pack a full suit for winter sessions; the sea sits around 13.6 C.
