Al Piri is the kite name for the beach at Torre Ovo, on the Ionian coast between Maruggio and Torricella: sand, flat-water character, and usable wind from NW, N and SE. It is light to moderate, 5-20 knots, which suits a big kite and a rider still building hours more than anyone chasing power.
May, June, July, September and October are the months to aim at. One thing to sort out before riding close in: a small shallow rock, a secca, sits just off the bar, visible and avoidable once you know where it is.
Piri Piri beach around it has a smooth depth increase, facilities and a heavy summer crowd, which is the awkward part, because no kite corridor has been confirmed here for the bathing season. September is on the recommended list and off the busy list, which makes it the obvious month.

Typical strength

Wave and wind consistency is high. The spot starts working at 5-10 knots and holds 10-20 knots.
Recommended months are May, June, July, September and October. The broader Puglia pattern is spring-to-autumn thermals plus stronger synoptic disturbances.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for 75-85 kg, scaled from the 5-20 knot working range rather than from local session logs: 12-14 m on the common 10-15 knot days, 9-10 m when it pushes to 18-20, and a foil or a 15-17 m if you want anything out of the 5-10 knot bottom end. No kite-size guidance specific to Torre Ovo is published.

Direction to shore

NW, N and SE are the usable directions, and the spot is described as offshore/inshore; the exact shore angle at each launch is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Smooth depth increase at Piri Piri Beach; a small shallow rock/secca close to shore near the bar is a known hazard.

Tides

Semidiurnal and small enough to ignore. The nearest gauge is Taranto, about 30 km along the coast: two highs and two lows a day, and a sample week of predictions spanned 0.13 m to 0.37 m, roughly a quarter of a metre between the week's lowest and highest water. There is no gauge at Torre Ovo itself, so the figures are the regional pattern rather than a local measurement.

Temperature

26.9°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer water is warm; winter needs a full wetsuit based on Maruggio sea temperatures, but no spot-specific wetsuit guide was found.

15–28°C water
A sandy beach with flat-water character, on the Ionian Sea. The bottom is sand and pebble at Piri Piri Beach, and the depth increases smoothly.

Your level

Beginner and intermediate suitability is an inference from the low wind range, the sandy beach and the flat-water character, not a local verdict. The shallow rocks close to shore need care.

Rules & access
2026: Regione Puglia approved the regional bathing ordinance with Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026; corridor and safety rules for the bathing season are then set locally by each circondario marittimo. The 2026 coast guard bathing ordinance often attached to this stretch of coast covers the Circondario Marittimo di Brindisi, Fasano to Torchiarolo, not Torre Ovo, so it does not govern Al Piri. No circondario ordinance or kite corridor specific to Al Piri or Piri Piri is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find the shallow rock near the bar before you ride the inside; it is small and close to shore.
  • Take the public walkway to the beach beyond the bar instead of crossing the private beach facilities.
  • Check the summer corridor rules before rigging: Piri Piri is a full bathing beach in July and August.
  • From Taranto, follow the Salento coastal road past Torre Ovo and continue about 400 m after the Torre dell'Ovo hill for the roadside parking by the bar.
