When it fills in

The easterly thermal behaves like a sea breeze: it builds through late morning, peaks in the afternoon and fades toward evening. Indicative, since no hour-by-hour pattern is published for this beach. Maestrale and Tramontana are synoptic and can be blowing at any hour, night included.

Frigole sits on the Adriatic side of Salento, just north-east of Lecce, on a sand strip between the sea and an artificial lake. The beach is wild and bathers mostly leave it alone, which is why the local school uses it as a summer home spot.
Beach launching runs all year through an authorized corridor managed by Locals Crew and Aloha Kite Team; no municipal document confirming that corridor was found, so treat it as unconfirmed. The main summer wind is Maestrale from the north-west, with Tramontana from the north, and an easterly thermal fills in when the forecast sets up south-east.
Add 3-5 knots to what the forecast shows, because the Otranto Channel squeezes the flow. May through September is the documented window, and the riding is freeride, freestyle and big air rather than waves. Winter still works, with stronger wind and a rougher sea, for people who want that.

Typical strength

13-22 knots with the summer NW Maestrale. The E thermal is quoted at 14-20 knots and also at 14-25 knots; the higher figure is unconfirmed.

NW Maestrale is very frequent from May to September. Add 3-5 knots to the forecast: the Otranto Channel funnels the flow.
Summer is the main season, with roughly 25 days of wind a month from May to September. The easterly thermal is mostly a June-to-August feature and needs a S-SE forecast to set up. Beach launching works all year; winter brings stronger wind and a rougher sea.

The quiver, in words

8-12 m covers the season. For a 75-85 kg rider that means 11-12 m at the bottom of the 13-22 knot Maestrale and 8-9 m when it is up or the easterly thermal is at its strongest; the 8-12 m range is the local one, the split by weight is indicative.

Direction to shore

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Fine sand that shelves gently, with shallow water for a long way out — shallow enough that the beach is used by families with small children and that a first lesson works standing. No measured wading distance exists for the kite area, so treat the extent as indicative.

Tides

No material tide effect was found in the spot sources.

Temperature

26.6°C summer · 13.7°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer often works in swimwear or shorty conditions; winter water around 13-14 C needs a full wetsuit.

14–28°C water
Long sandy beach on a strip between the Adriatic Sea and an artificial lake. The sea stays fairly calm even in sustained wind, because the main wind directions run parallel to the coast. In winter a strong blow leaves it rough.

Your level

The school runs its courses here and the strip is wide enough for a first lesson. The stronger winter days are for riders who can already handle a rough sea.

  • Winter wind can be strong with rough sea
  • Winter wind can be strong and the sea rough.
  • Forecasts may under-read by 3-5 knots because of the Otranto Channel Venturi effect.
Rules & access
2025 (Puglia regional beach ordinance): the bathing season runs 1 May to 30 September, around the clock, and the reserved bathing water reaches 200 m off the beach; launch corridors are laid out and maintained by the municipality or the concession holder to specifications set by the local Maritime Authority, and stopping or swimming inside a corridor is prohibited.
2021: beach launching at Frigole runs year-round, summer included, through an authorized corridor managed by Locals Crew and Aloha Kite Team — but no municipal or Coast Guard document naming that corridor was found, so the corridor itself is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Add 3-5 knots to the forecast: the Otranto Channel funnels the flow and the models under-read it.
  • Park in the open ground before the bridge and walk the last 100 m to the water.
  • Do not count on rescue outside summer; the cover is seasonal.
  • In bathing season, launch inside the authorized corridor and ask the school where it starts.
  • Bathing season runs 1 May to 30 September: that is the window in which the corridor and the 200 m bathing water actually bind you.
  • On a S-SE forecast, plan for the afternoon — the easterly thermal is the one that fills in late.
