When it fills in

Nothing switches on at a set hour. The winds that work here are synoptic, so once one is established it runs through the day and often overnight, and a blank forecast means a blank day. There is no afternoon thermal to save a morning.

Le Cesine sits on the Salento Adriatic coast at Marina di Vernole, on the San Cataldo-Otranto coastal road, right against the WWF Le Cesine reserve. Tramontana is the wind that makes it work, 15-30 knots when it is on, and N, NE through E/SE all give something; there is no daily thermal, so you ride the forecast.
Water is open Adriatic chop, over 2 m deep, with rocks along this stretch and toward San Foca. Parking is free and close to the sea, and it is not tied to the school. Ride inside the marked kite zone, do not pass the white or orange buoys, and keep off the reserve frontage.
May, June, September and October are the months to come; July and August the beach belongs to everyone else. Intermediate and up: the depth, the buoy limits and the rocks make this a poor place to learn.
A Melendugno ordinance of 21 August 2026 closed a stretch at Torre Specchia Ruggeri about 2 km south of the launch after rock falls, so read the signage before you drive further down the coast.

fills in: Nothing switches on at a set hour. The winds that work here are synoptic, so once one is established it runs through the day and often overnight, and a blank forecast means a blank day. There is no afternoon thermal to save a morning.

Typical strength

15-30 knots when Tramontana is working.

Forecast-dependent. The wind does not blow every day, though Tramontana or Grecale can settle in over spring and summer for weeks at a time.
Spring and autumn ride better than the middle of summer, because July-August crowds the beach. May, June, September and October are the months worth planning around.

synoptic

The quiver, in words

Indicative for 75-85 kg, with no local size chart on record: 12 m at the 15-knot end, 9 m through the usual 18 to 22, 7 m once Tramontana is into the high twenties.

Direction to shore

The shoreline runs NNW to SSE and faces roughly east-northeast, read off the map rather than measured locally. Tramontana from the N comes in side-shore from the left, Grecale from the NE is straight onshore, and Scirocco from the SE arrives side-onshore from the right.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

The sand shelves off gently at the waterline, giving a short waist-deep band to sort a kite out in. The riding area beyond it sits in more than 2 m, so once you are out toward the buoys there is nothing under your feet.

Tides

Tide is not a factor. High and low differ by roughly 20 to 30 cm at springs on this stretch of Adriatic coast, so the launch looks the same whatever hour you arrive. Water level here moves with wind and barometric pressure rather than with the moon.

Temperature

26.5°C summer · 13.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually no full wetsuit in peak summer; winter wetsuit likely required, but exact winter water temperature and thickness are unconfirmed.

14–28°C water
Open Adriatic sea with chop on windy days. 15-30 knot Tramontana creates chop; the Lido Le Cesine spot is also described with small waves and water depth over 2 m. The Vernole lido is described as an ample sandy beach with clear water.

Your level

Intermediate. Rock hazards, water over 2 m deep and the buoy and zone limits make this a spot for riders who are already independent.

Rescue

+39 346 0157029

No kite-specific rescue and no boat on standby. Through the Puglia bathing season, 23 May to 13 September 2026, beach concessions are required to run a rescue and lifeguard service and to open at least 09:00-19:00; outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water.
Sea emergencies go to the coastguard on 1530, free from any phone, with the Otranto captaincy covering this coast. The lido at the launch answers on +39 346 0157029.

Launch

Launch around Lido / Ultima Spiaggia Le Cesine on the San Cataldo-Otranto coastal road in Marina di Vernole, close to the Le Cesine reserve boundary. There is a free parking area near the sea, and it is not tied to the school.

  • Rocks
  • Respect the marked kite zone and buoys
  • Adjacent WWF protected area
  • Ride inside the marked kite zone and do not pass the white or orange buoys.
  • Rocks along this stretch and toward San Foca and Torre Specchia.
  • The WWF Le Cesine reserve is immediately next to the lido.
  • July and August crowding.
  • A Melendugno notice of 21 August 2026 closes a stretch at Torre Specchia Ruggeri after recent rock falls, south of the main launch.
  • Beach litter has been noted.
  • Comune di Melendugno Ordinanza n. 41/2026 (prot. 2026/1768) of 21 August 2026 closes a stretch of coast at Torre Specchia Ruggeri between 40.323125N/18.377817E and 40.322987N/18.378421E, about 2 km south of the main launch, because of recent rock falls; check current signage before using that stretch.
Rules & access
2026: ride inside the marked kitesurf zone and do not cross the white or orange buoys, and coming back in through a swimming area keep the kite on the seaward side. The buoy layout is set locally and changes from year to year, so ask the school on the beach before rigging. Regione Puglia's 2026 bathing ordinance fixes the season at 23 May to 13 September and reserves the sea within 200 m of beaches and low rocks, and 100 m of sheer coast, for swimmers around the clock during that period unless the maritime authority sets a different limit; the launch corridors that cross that band are laid out and maintained by the coastal municipality under the competent maritime authority's own ordinance, and concession holders may be allowed their own. No published 2026 corridor map for Le Cesine or Torre Specchia was found. Comune di Melendugno Ordinanza n. 41/2026 of 21 August 2026 closes a short stretch of coast at Torre Specchia Ruggeri after rock falls, about 2 km south of the launch.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask the on-site school for the current buoy layout before you rig, because it changes year to year.
  • Use the free parking close to the sea at Ultima Spiaggia Le Cesine.
  • Pick May, June, September or October over July and August if you want beach space.
  • Stay out of the reserve frontage and the bathing area when the wind pushes you down the coast.
  • Look for Tramontana or Grecale in the forecast; there is no thermal to fall back on.
  • Check current Torre Specchia signage for the rock-fall closure before launching south of Le Cesine.
  • Ignore the tide. It moves 20 to 30 cm here and changes nothing about the launch.
  • Outside 23 May to 13 September there is no lifeguard anywhere on this beach. Save 1530 before you drive down.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Le Cesine?

May, June, August, September and October are recommended, since spring and autumn avoid the July-August crowds.

Is it suitable for beginners?

No, the required level is intermediate, given rock hazards, open-water depth and buoy/zone constraints.

What is the wind like?

A Tramontana wind of 15-30 knots produces chop when it is working, though the wind is not present every day.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Riders must stay inside the marked buoys and respect the kitesurf zone next to the protected WWF Le Cesine reserve; a 2026 notice also flagged a temporary closure at Torre Specchia Ruggeri after rock falls.
