When it fills in

Frontal and Scirocco driven rather than thermal, so there is no clock to ride to. It can be blowing at first light or fill during the day, and it goes when the system moves through. Whether a usable summer sea breeze builds in the afternoon is unconfirmed.

Marina di Lizzano is a wave spot on the Ionian coast south of Taranto, and the two names you will hear are Il Parcheggio and Il Curvone, reef peaks that come alive on SE and S swell. On the days it is worth the drive the waves run medium to big. Tide is irrelevant here.
Both accesses give a medium launch and landing area, and the usable wind sits in the SE to SW sector, Scirocco included. Beginners should stay away: reef under the peaks, an exposed stretch of sea, no rescue of any kind on record, and entry that gets difficult once the wind goes past 25 knots.
What is unresolved is the legal side in the Puglia bathing season, because no corridor authorization is published for these exact accesses. April, May and September through December are the months named as best, though other guidance stretches the season across the whole April-December span.

Forecast-driven rather than reliable day to day. Frontal and Scirocco wave sessions, with no guaranteed summer thermal to fall back on.
The best window is given as April, May, September, October, November and December, though the rideable season is elsewhere stretched across the whole April-December span. The two do not agree. Swell follows the same shape: roughly ten swell events a month through autumn and winter, and rare ones in summer.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Il Parcheggio and Il Curvone are reef peaks that break on SE and S swell, with medium-to-big waves. The beach is part sand and part reef, so access is sandy while the wave sections sit over rock.

Rescue

No lifeguard post, rescue boat or kite-specific cover is on record at either access. In an emergency the numbers are 112 and the free coastguard line 1530; the Taranto coastguard operations room answers on 099 4713611. Plan the session around self-rescue.

Launch

Il Parcheggio is about 10 km south of Pulsano. Il Curvone sits below a left-hand uphill bend roughly 2 km after Onda Blu on the coastal road. Both have a medium-size launch and landing area.

  • rocky sections
  • other beach users
  • difficult entry when wind exceeds 25 knots
  • Reef wave sections at Il Parcheggio and Il Curvone.
  • Medium-to-big surf on the days the spot is best known for.
  • Other beach users, especially in the listed kite months.
  • No rescue service on record.
  • Regional bathing-season limits may require authorized corridors through the nearshore bathing zone.
  • No confirmed launch corridor, so in bathing season a legal launch and landing is not guaranteed at either access.
  • Exposed coast with no lifeguard post, and the nearest help is a phone call to the coastguard.
Rules & access
  • 2025: kiting on this stretch is governed by the boating regulation of the Taranto maritime district, Ordinanza 141 of 13/05/2025 of the Capitaneria di Porto di Taranto. Riding is allowed in daylight only, from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset, further out than 200 m from the shore and no more than one nautical mile off it. During the regional bathing season, launching and landing must happen inside an authorized corridor: 30 m wide at the waterline, widening to 80 m at the 100 m mark and holding that width out to 200 m, edged by orange buoys, with the two seaward buoys and a sign on the shoreline marked RISERVATO AL TRANSITO KITESURF. You body-drag the first 100 m, one rider at a time in that stretch, and riders coming in have priority. Minimum age is 16. A lifejacket is compulsory at all times whatever the distance from shore, and you must carry a line cutter and a working quick release.
  • 2026: Regione Puglia Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026 sets the regional bathing season from 23 May to 13 September and leaves the provision of public launch corridors to the coastal municipalities. No corridor has been confirmed at Il Parcheggio or Il Curvone, which leaves launching in bathing season legally unresolved here.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Confirm with locals which access is in use, Il Parcheggio or Il Curvone, before you unpack the van.
  • Come here on a south-sector swell forecast, not for flat-water practice.
  • In bathing season, do not launch across the beach-user area unless a corridor is clearly marked and active.
  • Bring strapless gear only if you are comfortable riding over reef peaks.
  • Minimum age is 16 and a lifejacket is compulsory whatever the distance from shore.
  • Carry a line cutter and check the quick release before you rig; both are required here, not just good practice.
  • Stay outside 200 m from the shore and inside a mile of it, and be off the water an hour before sunset.

Southeast and southwest wind are the usable directions, driven by frontal Scirocco systems rather than a guaranteed daily thermal.

What are the hazards at Marina di Lizzano?
