Flat, clean water off a medium sandy beach, with the road and the parking right behind where you rig. Viale del Tramonto at San Vito is Taranto's own spot: north and northeast plus northwest, 15 to 35 knots, season running April through October. Rocks and stones sit on the bottom, so walk your entry line before riding close to shore.
In August the swimmers take the beach and cars pass close enough that a lofted kite has somewhere bad to go. Skip that month. The 2026 Puglia bathing ordinance governs the summer and nobody has published a San Vito launch corridor, so ask locally which water is legal before you rig.
Kitesurf Taranto and ASD Kitesurf Taranto teach in town, and on a clean flat day this is a fair place to learn.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m covers the 15-18 kt bottom end, 9 m carries the 20-25 kt middle, 7 m once it pushes past 30. Derived from the 15-35 kt range the spot is credited with; no local rider report or school kit list was found to check it against.

Direction to shore

The beach sits at the southern edge of the Mar Grande, the bay closed off by Punta Rondinella to the north-west and Capo San Vito to the south, so the open water lies out to the north-west. NW arrives onshore, N comes in cross-onshore over the sand, and NE runs side-shore with the width of the bay downwind of you.Indicative: worked out from how the bay is shaped, not from a reading taken on the beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No lifeguard cover and no club rescue boat are confirmed for this beach. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the national number for an emergency at sea, answered by the coastguard. The two Taranto clubs are the only realistic help on the water and neither publishes a rescue service.

Launch

Medium sandy beach on Viale del Tramonto, with road and parking immediately next to the launch.

Rules & access
2026: Regione Puglia Determinazione Dirigenziale n. 215 of 15 April 2026 approves the regional bathing ordinance. From 23 May to 13 September 2026 the sea up to 200 m from beaches or low rocks and 100 m from cliffs is ordinarily reserved for bathing, unless the maritime authority sets different limits. Launch corridors follow the competent maritime-authority ordinance and, for public use, have to be arranged by the coastal municipality. No spot-specific rule has been published for San Vito; talk to the locals before you go on the water.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig with extra room downwind of you: the road and the cars are right there.
  • Walk the shallows on foot before your first ride and note where the rocks and stones are.
  • In August, stay off the water unless a legal corridor and someone local watching the swimmers are both clear.
  • Ask ASD Kitesurf Taranto about the current maritime-authority limits before a summer session.
  • N and NE come off the land at this end of the bay. Flat water is what you get for it; an unassisted drift out across the Mar Grande is what you risk.
