Good to know before you go3
- Darsena and Principe di Piemonte are not authorised kite launches — access is tolerated rather than official, and summer use around bathers carries real risk and social friction.
- Marina di Vecchiano sits inside a regional park with occasional military exercise closures; it is not a guaranteed year-round access point.
- This is a Libeccio (SW) wind-window destination worked mainly October-May; expect long flat spells rather than a reliable daily forecast.
The spots
Marina di Vecchiano
Marina di Vecchiano is the beach at the Serchio river mouth on the Tyrrhenian coast north of Pisa, inside the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli park.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 9.6 kt in November, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Marina di Vecchiano: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Marina di Vecchiano
Kite, wingfoil and windsurf all use it. The launch is big sand with room to spare, and the parking sits close to the mouth once you take Via del Mare from Migliarino and follow the dirt road. It is a Libeccio spot: when it blows hard the sea at the mouth turns very messy, and that is exactly when people come. W is the usual direction, S and W are the ones recommended, and the best winds run October to April. The water is shallow in places, flat to choppy, with small waves where the river meets the sea, and tide does not come into it. It is rated for any level on paper, but a river mouth in a storm is not where you learn. Nothing here is serviced: no rescue on record, boats in the channel, a protected park behind you.
Getting on the water
Big sandy beach with lots of space near the Serchio river mouth; parking is close to the river mouth after taking Via del Mare from Migliarino and continuing on the dirt road.
If it goes wrong
Unserviced. No lifeguard post, rescue boat or school cover was found anywhere on this beach, and the parking near the mouth is the closest a vehicle gets to the water. Plan on your own self-rescue and a long walk back up the sand.
Rules and access
2026: parking at Marina di Vecchiano is paid from 9 May to 30 September. Vecchiano residents buy a season pass for 20 EUR through the municipal portal and authorised plates go to the parking operator electronically; no non-resident tariff is published. The beach-safety ordinance n. 50/2026 that is sometimes quoted for this beach is the Piombino maritime district's, covering the coast between the Foce dell'Alma and the Fossa Camilla in the comuni of Scarlino, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo and Castagneto Carducci, and it carries no force at the Serchio mouth. The ordinance that does govern this stretch is not published, so launch corridors, bathing-season limits and any hour restriction here remain unconfirmed.
Viareggio Darsena
Darsena is the free beach just south of Viareggio's harbour, and it is a Libeccio spot: when the south-west fills in, the locals go.

Viareggio Darsena: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Viareggio Darsena
Open sandy coast, not a lagoon, so expect beach-break in SW swell rather than flat water. The catch here is legal, not physical. Darsena has no authorized kite zone and no marked corridor of its own, so riders lean on the general free-beach exemption in the 2026 Viareggio ordinance, which permits kite transit while no bather is within 60 m. In full bathing season that mostly means locals only, because the sand fills up and the risk of hitting someone is real. Tolerated until the free beach gets too crowded, and no further. Intermediate and up on a Libeccio forecast; this is not a beach to learn on.
Getting on the water
Launch from the free beach on the south side of Viareggio's Darsena.
If it goes wrong
No kitesurf rescue at Darsena. Under the 2026 Viareggio bathing-safety ordinance a lifeguard service, where one is provided, runs 09:00 to 19:00 through the bathing season, and a beach with no service must fly a red flag and post multilingual signage saying bathing is unsafe for want of a rescue service. Whether the Comune staffs the Darsena free beach is unconfirmed. For an emergency on the water the Coast Guard emergency line is 1530.
Rules and access
2026: bathing-safety ordinance n. 27 of 12 May 2026 for the Circondario Marittimo di Viareggio covers Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, and replaced ordinance n. 50/2025. Article 2 reserves the sea within 300 m of the beaches for bathers and, between 08:30 and 19:30 in the bathing season, forbids the transit of any craft inside that band, windsurf, wingfoil and kitesurf named explicitly; the exception that matters here is article 2.5.1(f), which allows windsurf, wingfoil, kitesurf and wave-driven boards in the water off free beaches provided no bather is within 60 m. Article 3 bans bathing in the port and within 100 m of the harbour mouth, the port structures and ships anchored in the roadstead. Article 7 launch corridors exist only where a concession holder has applied and the Comune has authorized one: at least 10 m wide, extending 50 m beyond the 300 m bathing line, buoyed and signed. Darsena has no such corridor, so the 60 m clearance off the free beach is the entire legal basis for riding here. Article 4 sets lifeguard hours at 09:00-19:00 where a service is run, and requires a red flag plus multilingual signage where it is not.

Ringed months are the ones riders and schools name: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Oct, Nov, Dec.
The model is wrong here
The modelled series peaks at 13% of days and never reaches 15% in any month, at a place that is ridden all season. The figures are drawn rather than dropped, and they are not the answer — the months riders name are.
Viareggio Principe di Piemonte: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Viareggio Principe di Piemonte
It works on Libeccio, and locals come here when Calambrone is blowing too hard. October to May is the window: once the bathing season opens, the establishments take the sand and the water in front of it, and the spot closes. Open Tyrrhenian sand over sandbars, chop and beach-break in S to SW wind. When the sea is big the waves get demanding fast, and no kite rescue has been confirmed for the off-season. Bring a full winter suit and someone on the beach. Intermediate and up; a learner has no business here on a storm day.
Getting on the water
Launch in front of the Hotel/Bagno Principe di Piemonte at the end of the Viareggio promenade toward Lido di Camaiore.
If it goes wrong
Off-season, which is when people ride here, nothing. In season the concession's lifeguard service runs 09:00 to 19:00 with at least one qualified assistant per 80 m of seafront under the 2026 Viareggio ordinance, and green, yellow and red flags on the establishment's pole tell you what the beach thinks of the sea state. That is a bathing service, not a kite service. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the free coastguard blue number, or 112. Plan a winter session around self-rescue and somebody standing on the sand.
Room to rig
medium outside bathing season; crowded/occupied by bathing establishments in summer
Rules and access
2026: bathing-safety ordinance n. 27/2026 for the Circondario marittimo di Viareggio, signed 12 May 2026 and covering Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi. The sea within 300 m of the waterline is reserved for bathers, and between 08:30 and 19:30 the transit of windsurf, wingfoil, kitesurf and wave boards inside that band is prohibited, with one exception that matters on this coast: it is allowed in the water in front of free beaches provided no bather is within 60 m. In front of a bathing concession like Principe di Piemonte that exception does not apply, and crossing the bathing zone needs a launch corridor: at least 10 m wide, no wider than the concession frontage, running 50 m past the bathing limit, buoyed at intervals of no more than 20 m over the first 100 m and no less than 50 m after that, white flags on the outer buoys and a multilingual sign at the waterline reading RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI - DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE. The concessionaire applies to the Comune for it and must then tell the Capitaneria di porto di Viareggio it has been laid. No corridor is registered for Principe di Piemonte. An organised school or course in front of a concession is a separate authorisation and needs its own buoyed area inside the bathing band plus one lifeguard dedicated to it. The bathing season runs from the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September, 16 May to 20 September in 2026, and the launch is treated locally as winter-only.

What riders say
4 recurring claims
This is not a summer-holiday kite beach in the normal sense: the useful windows are mostly outside bathing season, or squeezed into the free-beach/river-mouth areas when swimmers are around.
consensus×4 riders
The wind people chase here is mostly Libeccio or other western-quadrant weather wind, not a daily thermal machine; riders compare it with nearby Calambrone because Viareggio/Vecchiano can be weaker or cleaner only in certain setups.
majority×4 riders
There is space on paper, but access is the real limit: ordinances, packed beaches, and local launch choices matter more than beach length.
majority×4 riders
When it is windy enough to be interesting, the sea can get messy fast: big waves, chop and current show up in the rider descriptions, especially around Marina di Vecchiano and Principe.

What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.
- Is 'Viareggio' the name riders actually use for this area?
- No pricing, SIM/currency (Italy/EU obviously but not independently confirmed for this file), or specific accommodation/restaurant recommendations were found in local kite-trip sources — general Italy defaults were deliberately left as null rather than assumed.
- Current (2026) status of military-exercise closures at the Marina di Vecchiano access road is unconfirmed.
