A winter launch on the Versilia coast, in front of the Principe di Piemonte hotel at the end of the Viareggio promenade toward Lido di Camaiore. It works on Libeccio, and locals come here when Calambrone is blowing too hard.
October to May is the window: once the bathing season opens, the establishments take the sand and the water in front of it, and the spot closes. Open Tyrrhenian sand over sandbars, chop and beach-break in S to SW wind. When the sea is big the waves get demanding fast, and no kite rescue has been confirmed for the off-season.
Bring a full winter suit and someone on the beach. Intermediate and up; a learner has no business here on a storm day.

Character

fills in: Frontal, not thermal. Libeccio arrives with a weather system and can be up at any hour, build through the day or die inside two, so the session is planned off the forecast and the sea state together. No local onset pattern has been recorded.

Typical strength

No wind measurement is published for this launch. What sets the floor is the use case rather than a statistic: riders come here on Libeccio and frontal wind, and specifically when Calambrone is over-powered, so the days that get used here are the strong ones.

Libeccio and perturbation wind. No thermal pattern and no average knots have been established for this launch.
A winter spot. The beach is not usable for kitesurfing once the bathing season starts; riding here runs October to May.

The model is wrong here

The model reads 13% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

Open Tyrrhenian sand over sandbars, so depth steps in and out along the bars instead of shelving evenly, and no wading depth has been measured here. On the storm days this launch is actually used for, there is no standing area worth planning around.

Tides

Kite conditions at Viareggio are not tide-dependent; unconfirmed for the Principe di Piemonte launch itself.

Temperature

25.8°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty or light neoprene can be enough in high summer, but this specific launch is documented as a winter/off-season spot; a full winter wetsuit is needed for the main kite season.

Open Tyrrhenian sandy beach. Rough-sea days are very demanding, with chop, small waves and beach-break in S to SW winds over sandbars.

The beach is sand, but the real use case is Libeccio and winter storm and wave riding. Big-sea days are demanding, and beginner suitability is unconfirmed.

Rescue

Off-season, which is when people ride here, nothing. In season the concession's lifeguard service runs 09:00 to 19:00 with at least one qualified assistant per 80 m of seafront under the 2026 Viareggio ordinance, and green, yellow and red flags on the establishment's pole tell you what the beach thinks of the sea state.
That is a bathing service, not a kite service. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the free coastguard blue number, or 112. Plan a winter session around self-rescue and somebody standing on the sand.

Rules & access
2026: bathing-safety ordinance n. 27/2026 for the Circondario marittimo di Viareggio, signed 12 May 2026 and covering Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi. The sea within 300 m of the waterline is reserved for bathers, and between 08:30 and 19:30 the transit of windsurf, wingfoil, kitesurf and wave boards inside that band is prohibited, with one exception that matters on this coast: it is allowed in the water in front of free beaches provided no bather is within 60 m. In front of a bathing concession like Principe di Piemonte that exception does not apply, and crossing the bathing zone needs a launch corridor: at least 10 m wide, no wider than the concession frontage, running 50 m past the bathing limit, buoyed at intervals of no more than 20 m over the first 100 m and no less than 50 m after that, white flags on the outer buoys and a multilingual sign at the waterline reading RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI - DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE. The concessionaire applies to the Comune for it and must then tell the Capitaneria di porto di Viareggio it has been laid. No corridor is registered for Principe di Piemonte. An organised school or course in front of a concession is a separate authorisation and needs its own buoyed area inside the bathing band plus one lifeguard dedicated to it. The bathing season runs from the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September, 16 May to 20 September in 2026, and the launch is treated locally as winter-only.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the Libeccio forecast and the sea state together: the hazard climbs with wave size faster than with wind.
  • Stay off it during the bathing season unless a local operator confirms a legal launch arrangement.
  • When Calambrone is over-powered, drive up here instead.
  • Agree your self-rescue plan before a winter session, because no kite rescue service is confirmed.
  • The in-season ban runs 08:30 to 19:30 and applies to the water in front of the concessions; the free-beach stretches on this coast are governed instead by the 60 m no-bather rule, so ask before assuming either.
  • Nobody is watching the water in winter. Bring a second person and a phone that can reach 1530.

No. Local guides treat it as an off-season intermediate-to-advanced spot, warning that big-sea days can be very demanding.

Wind is synoptic, driven mainly by the Libeccio (SW) and other perturbation systems, with no reliable summer thermal pattern.

Are there rules or restrictions?

The 2026 Viareggio bathing-safety ordinance reserves the nearshore zone for bathers in summer, and local guides state kitesurfing is not possible here during that season.

What hazards should riders know about?

Rough-sea days bring demanding chop and waves over sandbars, and no kite-specific rescue service was confirmed for the off-season launch.
