When it fills in

There is no daily clock, because the sessions that count here are frontal and can start at any hour. In settled high pressure the land breeze blows in the morning and that is the more dependable part of the day; an afternoon sea breeze is rare and short-lived when it turns up at all.

Calambrone is a stretch of the Litorale Pisano just north of Livorno port, and it is less one spot than a line of launches: Tarpons Bay by the Scolmatore, Oasi del Mare, and gates further up toward Tirrenia.
The coast is well exposed to the western quadrant, so Libeccio and Ponente in autumn and winter are the real sessions, and Libeccio comes in onshore and can reach 50 knots and more. Eastern winds work too, offshore off the land and flat. Summer Maestrale rarely exceeds 15 knots, which makes it a foil month.
There is flat water for several meters off the sand even when a big swell is running, which is why the freestylers are here. The awkward part is access: some launches are members-only, some are winter-only, and the bathing season closes the rest, so check before you drive out. Windsurfers use the same water at Tarpons Bay.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow at Calambrone and Tarpons Bay. No depth figure or wading distance has been published.

Tides

Tide is indifferent.

Temperature

25.6°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer is warm-water; winter around 13 C normally needs a full wetsuit.

13–28°C water
Flat water for several meters off the sand even with large swells running, which is why freestylers use it. The sandy beach otherwise gives flat, chop, small waves or medium waves depending on the day.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginners, intermediates and pros all use this coast, but the day decides: strong Libeccio is not a learning session. Oasi del Mare runs beginner courses at the nearby Windsurf Club Calambrone, away from the bathing area.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue for independent riders. Lifeguard cover on the beaches exists only inside the 1 May to 30 September bathing season. The sailing school at Viale del Tirreno 88 in Calambrone is the nearest staffed contact on +39 050 33605, and its kite lessons run from the Windsurf Club Calambrone about 500 m south, near the Scolmatore mouth.

Launch

Multiple sandy launches between Calambrone and Tirrenia, including Circolo Windsurf Calambrone, Oasi del Mare and Tarpons Bay near the Scolmatore. Some access is members-only, winter-only or otherwise limited.

  • restricted or member-only access at some launches
  • windsurf traffic
  • thorns hidden in the grass rigging area at Tarpons Bay
  • member-only or restricted access at some launches
  • winter-only access at some Tirrenia launches

  • very strong Libeccio
  • bathing-season restrictions
  • Permanent no-bathing zone at the Foce Calambrone, the Scolmatore outflow next to the Tarpons Bay launch
Rules & access
Access is the rule that matters here, and it is set launch by launch rather than by one ordinance.
  • 2026: the Comune di Pisa gives the bathing season as 1 May to 30 September, with permanent no-bathing zones at Bocca d'Arno, Foce Calambrone and Bocca di Fiume Morto - the Calambrone mouth being the Scolmatore outflow beside Tarpons Bay - and no other bathing bans in force for the season. Car access to the Circolo Windsurf Calambrone is for members, on an annual pass or a day fee. Oasi del Mare is entered through the bathing establishment. The Tarpon's Bay barrier at the Scolmatore is officially restricted but in practice usually left open. UAPPALA and the Tirrenia Piazza gates are free in winter only and close as soon as the umbrellas and sunbeds go in.
  • 2026: a course at the sailing school needs an FIV card at 25 EUR plus a medical fitness certificate, and its kite zone sits at the Windsurf Club Calambrone about 500 m south, clear of the bathing water. Coast-guard bathing-safety ordinance n. 50/2026 does not apply to this beach: it covers the Piombino maritime district between La Foce and Fossa Camilla - Scarlino, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo and Castagneto Carducci - while Calambrone falls under Livorno, whose 2026 ordinance and kite corridors are unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Confirm the gate, the club membership and the corridor status before you drive to a launch; several are winter-only.
  • Do not rig barefoot at Tarpons Bay. There are thorns in the grass.
  • Bring a 5 m for strong Libeccio, because that is the size that gets used here.
  • Handle Scirocco carefully: it comes in side-off and gusty.
  • Expect windsurf traffic at Tarpons Bay and the Circolo, and leave them room.
  • In settled weather take the morning land breeze. The afternoon sea breeze here is rare and does not last.
  • Keep off the Scolmatore outflow at Foce Calambrone: it is a permanent no-bathing zone right beside the Tarpons Bay launch.

What is the wind like?

Libeccio can reach 50 knots or more and is reported onshore, while summer Maestrale is lighter, usually under 15 knots and more foil-oriented.

Beginner, intermediate and pro levels are listed, and Oasi del Mare runs beginner courses at the nearby Windsurf Club Calambrone away from the bathing area.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

A 2026 Livorno Coast Guard ordinance covers kite launch and landing corridors, and some Calambrone/Tirrenia launches are winter-only or members-only.

What is the water like?

Calambrone keeps flat water for several meters from shore even with large swells, over a sandy, shallow bottom, which makes it popular for freestyle.

What hazards should riders know about?

Thorns hidden in the rigging grass at Tarpons Bay, windsurf traffic, and restricted or winter-only access at some launches are the main issues.
