On the clock

13:00 · 18:00

around 13:00-18:00 for the summer thermal reported at nearby Tor del Sale/Chernobyl

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Perelli is the kite and windsurf stretch on the Piombino side of the Gulf of Follonica, a long sandy beach with shallow water and a set of accesses off the same coastal road: Perelli 1, Perelli 2, Perelli 3, Mortelliccio, Carbonifera and Quagliodromo. Perelli 1 is the one kiters actually use.
What makes it useful in Tuscany is that it works on east and southeast wind, which most of the regional coast cannot use, and those days come in autumn, winter and spring. Levante arrives side-shore and cleans up the waves.
Scirocco and Libeccio build the bigger sessions, with formed waves up to about 2 m in some disturbance setups, and those are not beginner days, whatever the record's grading suggests. Summer runs on the thermal, around 13:00-18:00 at the Tor del Sale end, but July and August bathers and bathing-season closures take most of the accesses out of play. The season on record is April to November.

fills in: around 13:00-18:00 for the summer thermal reported at nearby Tor del Sale/Chernobyl

Typical strength

No knot log exists for Perelli 1 itself. Two kilometres down the same beach, at the Tor del Sale end, the summer thermal is put at 6-9 m/s, roughly 12-17 knots; spring Maestrale often passes 10 m/s, about 20 knots; Ponente comes in at 8-15 m/s, about 16-30 knots; a hard Scirocco can pass 15 m/s, about 30 knots. Nothing equivalent has been measured at Perelli 1.

Perelli gets plenty of wind: thermal days in summer, and stronger disturbance winds through autumn, winter and spring.
Autumn, winter and spring Scirocco and Grecale are what this stretch is used for, along with E/SE, which are rare usable directions in Tuscany. The season runs April to November, though summer crowding puts most of the sub-spots out of reach.

Thermal or synoptic

thermal in summer plus synoptic disturbance winds

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, worked from the wind bands recorded on this stretch rather than from a local log: 12 m in a 12-15 knot thermal, 9-10 m at 16-20 knots, 7 m around 25, 5-6 m when a Scirocco pushes past 30. A rider filmed here in 25 knots of Scirocco was out on a 10 m, a size above that.

Direction to shore

E/Levante is side-shore at Perelli; SE/Scirocco pushes wind and waves more along the beach; Maestrale/NW belongs to nearby Tor del Sale/Chernobyl rather than to Perelli 1.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Tides

Not something you plan a session around. Predicted highs at Piombino sit around 0.24-0.38 m and lows around 0.06-0.21 m, so the daily swing is usually 10 to 30 cm and the launch does not move with it.

Temperature

25.6°C summer · 13.9°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorty, rash vest or shorts in the warmest months; wetsuit off season.

14–27°C water
Low water and a wide sandy coast characterize Perelli and nearby Carbonifera. Conditions range from chop and small waves to clean wave days with easterly winds, and some southerly disturbance setups can produce waves up to about 2 m.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The sandy, low-bottom coast is forgiving in moderate conditions. Strong Scirocco and formed-wave setups belong to experienced wave riders.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

No kite rescue, no rescue boat and no patrolled corridor at any of the accesses. Sea emergencies go to the Coast Guard on 1530, free from any Italian phone, or on 112, or by VHF channel 16. The good months here are the empty ones, and outside bathing season there is nobody on the beach.

Launch

A cluster of beach accesses off the same coastal road, with Perelli 1 the one kiters actually use and Carbonifera, Mortelliccio and Quagliodromo nearby. Parking is free; outside the bathing season you can drive down onto the sand itself. Levante runs parallel to the shore here, which is what keeps the wave clean.

Hazards riders report 6

  • many sub-spots not practicable when the beach is crowded in summer
  • waves up to around 2 m in some disturbance setups
  • summer bathers and crowded beaches can make many sub-spots impractical
  • formed waves up to about 2 m in some southerly/easterly disturbance setups
  • Carbonifera is reportedly closed during the bathing season
  • the Tor del Sale/Chernobyl sub-spot can be side-off in Maestrale
Rules & access
Carbonifera is reportedly closed during the bathing season. No current municipal or Guardia Costiera kite-corridor text is published for Perelli in 2026.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Start at Perelli 1 and only move to another access once you have confirmed locally that it is open and uncrowded.
  • Plan a trip around an E or SE forecast: few Tuscan spots work on those directions.
  • Check bathing-season restrictions before rigging at Carbonifera; it is reportedly closed in season.
  • Leave the strong Scirocco wave days to riders who already ride waves.
  • Drive from Piombino toward Follonica, pass the power station, take the second right and follow the canal down to the coast.
  • Out of season you can drive to the sand. In bathing season you park and walk.
  • Ignore the tide. The swing is 10 to 30 cm and it moves nothing.

FAQ

What is the wind like?

Perelli works with an unusually wide range of directions for Tuscany, including E Levante and SE Scirocco, plus Grecale, Libeccio and Maestrale; Levante gives side-shore wind and cleaner waves.

When is the best time?

April to November, with autumn, winter and spring especially praised for E/SE wind that is rare elsewhere in Tuscany; summer brings more beach crowding.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The sandy, shallow bottom is reported as forgiving, but strong Scirocco or formed-wave setups suit experienced wave riders.

What are the hazards?

Waves up to about 2 m in some disturbance setups, many sub-spots become impractical when the beach is crowded in summer, and Carbonifera is reported closed during the bathing season.
