Fiumara is the kite beach between Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia, and the best documented one on the Maremma coast. You get there from SP158 at km 31, park, then walk roughly 8 minutes through the Pineta del Tombolo carrying everything, which is the detail that decides how much gear you bring.
What the walk buys you is a reserved 5000 m2 sandy kite area, obstacle-free, with a buoyed no-swim corridor for getting to the water. The seabed is sand and shelves slowly, so a first lesson works here and a strong rider still has room.
Wind runs SW to NW, side to cross-side, and in summer the NW thermal fills in from early afternoon at 14-20 knots. The corridor is described with different lengths in different places, so follow the buoys as they are set on the day rather than a number you read before leaving.
June through September you share the sand with everyone else on the Maremma coast.

fills in: In summer the NW thermal fills in from the first hours of the afternoon. The SW and NW synoptic winds either side of summer can blow at any hour.

Typical strength

Starts working from about 10 knots and runs 10-20; the summer NW thermal sits at 14-20 knots and puts you on starboard tack.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, read off the published wind range rather than measured on the beach: 12 m when the NW thermal first fills in around 14 knots, 9 m once it is up at 18-20. The spot is said to start working from about 10 knots, so a light-wind kite is not wasted luggage in June and September.

Direction to shore

Working winds come from the SW to NW quadrant, side-shore to side-on-shore. The summer NW thermal is starboard tack.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Sandy, slowly shelving seabed; exact standing-depth distance is unconfirmed.

Tides

Small Tyrrhenian/Mediterranean tide range; Grosseto tide tables show daily ranges around a few tenths of a metre, and no tide-dependent kite setup is on record.

Temperature

25.5°C summer · 14.8°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually boardshorts or a shorty in peak summer; full wetsuit in winter and shoulder-season cold fronts.

Currents

Current at the river mouth of the Fiumara di San Leopoldo, plus a coastal current along the beach. Neither is quantified anywhere published, so treat the drift as something to check on the day before you go out on the corridor.

15–27°C water
Sandy bottom that shelves slowly, choppy on top with small waves possible. Water at Grosseto averages around 25.5 C in August and 14.8 C in January.

The sand shelves slowly enough that a first lesson works here and a good rider still has water under the board. The dedicated corridor does not exempt anyone from normal summer beach manners.

Rescue

Kite Beach Fiumara, the school on the sand, keeps a safety boat for sea recoveries and runs it during its own hours. There is no public cover on the corridor outside that, and no lifeguard station is attached to the kite area. For anything serious the Italian sea-rescue number is 1530.

Launch

Large reserved sandy kite area at Fiumara, given as 5000 m2 and free of obstacles, with a sea-access lane marked by floating buoys where swimming is banned. The lane's size is published three different ways: 120 m, 140 m given as a width, and a 200 m entry corridor. Follow the buoys as they stand on the day.

Rules & access
2026: coastguard bathing-safety ordinance n. 37 del 15 maggio 2026 for the Grosseto and Porto Santo Stefano stretch requires windsurf and kitesurf to reach the water through specifically authorized launch corridors during the bathing season. At Fiumara that corridor is the buoyed no-swim lane off the kite area.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Pack so you can carry it all in one trip: the walk in from the SP158 km 31 parking is about 8 minutes through the pinewood.
  • In summer, aim at the early afternoon, when the NW thermal fills in.
  • Ride the corridor exactly as it is buoyed that day; the published lengths disagree with each other.
  • For a 75-85 kg rider the thermal is a 12 m and 9 m question; 10 knots is enough to get going here, so bring the big one.
  • Rescue on the water comes from the school's own boat during school hours. Outside them there is nobody, and 1530 is the number.
