When it fills in

No daily thermal cycle to plan around. Libeccio arrives with the weather system, can be in at dawn and can hold through the night. The small afternoon lift visible in reanalysis is not enough to build a session on. Indicative.

Darsena is the free beach just south of Viareggio's harbour, and it is a Libeccio spot: when the south-west fills in, the locals go. Open sandy coast, not a lagoon, so expect beach-break in SW swell rather than flat water. The catch here is legal, not physical.
Darsena has no authorized kite zone and no marked corridor of its own, so riders lean on the general free-beach exemption in the 2026 Viareggio ordinance, which permits kite transit while no bather is within 60 m. In full bathing season that mostly means locals only, because the sand fills up and the risk of hitting someone is real.
Tolerated until the free beach gets too crowded, and no further. Intermediate and up on a Libeccio forecast; this is not a beach to learn on.

fills in: No daily thermal cycle to plan around. Libeccio arrives with the weather system, can be in at dawn and can hold through the night. The small afternoon lift visible in reanalysis is not enough to build a session on. Indicative.

Typical strength

A Libeccio session runs roughly 15-25 kn and there is little else. Over 2019-2024 a coastal reanalysis point on this shore had only about 3% of hours at or above 12 kn, clustered in October to March and close to zero from June to August; that point sits partly over land and understates wind over the water, so read it as the shape of the year rather than the number. Indicative, no local measurement.

Darsena works on Libeccio, the south-west wind. No typical strength or reliability figures have been published for it.
Rideable almost all year. In peak bathing season it is usually locals only, because the spot is not authorized and the bathers are the hazard; use is tolerated until the free beach fills, and no longer.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m covers an ordinary Libeccio day, 9 m once the front is properly in, 14-15 m only for the tail of a dying breeze. Sessions are rare enough that most locals bring one kite and the forecast. Indicative sizing derived from the wind range, not from local rider reports.

Direction to shore

The Versilia shoreline here runs NNW-SSE and the sea lies off to the WSW. W and WSW are square onshore. Libeccio from the SW comes in cross-onshore from the left, which is the angle the spot is ridden on.The E and NE winds that dominate the daily average blow straight off the land and are no use here. Shore angle derived from the mapped shoreline, not from a local survey.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No measured profile has been published for the Darsena free beach. The one depth reference that exists for this coast is regulatory: the safe-water limit for non-swimmers is fixed at 1.60 m, and where a free beach does not mark that line with white floats the Comune must post a multilingual sign saying the 1.60 m limit is unmarked. How far out you can actually stand at Darsena is unrecorded.

Tides

Effectively tideless. Modelled sea level over three months gave a daily range of 0.14-0.38 m, median about 0.25 m, so the tide never sets the session or the launch. Modelled, no local gauge reading.

Temperature

25.8°C summer · 13.1°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer water is warm; winter requires a full wetsuit. Exact local kite wetsuit guidance is unconfirmed.

13–28°C water
A beach break that works on small to medium SW swell even without wind. Perturbation winds regularly build waves at Viareggio; flat water and standing depth at Darsena are unconfirmed.

Your level

Nothing supports Darsena as a teaching beach. The unauthorized summer status, the bathers and the beach-break setting all argue against listing it as beginner-friendly.

Rescue

No kitesurf rescue at Darsena. Under the 2026 Viareggio bathing-safety ordinance a lifeguard service, where one is provided, runs 09:00 to 19:00 through the bathing season, and a beach with no service must fly a red flag and post multilingual signage saying bathing is unsafe for want of a rescue service.
Whether the Comune staffs the Darsena free beach is unconfirmed. For an emergency on the water the Coast Guard emergency line is 1530.

Launch from the free beach on the south side of Viareggio's Darsena.

Hazards riders report 11

  • bathers in season
  • not clearly authorized as a formal kite zone
  • bathers during the bathing season
  • Not an authorized kite spot.
  • risk of incidents with beach users in peak season
  • open beach-break waves in SW swell
  • harbour/darsena proximity
  • bathers during the bathing season, and the 60 m clearance you have to keep from every one of them
  • not an authorized kite spot: no launch corridor of its own, use tolerated rather than permitted
  • harbour mouth immediately north, with a 100 m exclusion around the entrance, the port structures and anchored ships
  • E and NE land winds are offshore here and take you out to sea
Rules & access
2026: bathing-safety ordinance n. 27 of 12 May 2026 for the Circondario Marittimo di Viareggio covers Viareggio, Camaiore, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, and replaced ordinance n. 50/2025. Article 2 reserves the sea within 300 m of the beaches for bathers and, between 08:30 and 19:30 in the bathing season, forbids the transit of any craft inside that band, windsurf, wingfoil and kitesurf named explicitly; the exception that matters here is article 2.5.1(f), which allows windsurf, wingfoil, kitesurf and wave-driven boards in the water off free beaches provided no bather is within 60 m. Article 3 bans bathing in the port and within 100 m of the harbour mouth, the port structures and ships anchored in the roadstead. Article 7 launch corridors exist only where a concession holder has applied and the Comune has authorized one: at least 10 m wide, extending 50 m beyond the 300 m bathing line, buoyed and signed. Darsena has no such corridor, so the 60 m clearance off the free beach is the entire legal basis for riding here. Article 4 sets lifeguard hours at 09:00-19:00 where a service is run, and requires a red flag plus multilingual signage where it is not.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not launch while bathers are on the free beach: what you are riding under is a 60 m clearance, not a corridor.
  • Read the current Viareggio ordinance before a summer session; use here is tolerated rather than authorized.
  • Watch the Libeccio forecast and come expecting beach-break instead of flat water.
  • Keep well clear of the harbour mouth when you are drifting downwind.
  • Keep well clear of the harbour mouth when you are drifting downwind: bathing and transit are barred within 100 m of the entrance and the port structures.
  • Treat anything from the E or NE as offshore and skip it, however good the strength looks.
  • Bring 9 and 12 m. Nothing here rewards a big-kite day.
