Marina di Vecchiano is the beach at the Serchio river mouth on the Tyrrhenian coast north of Pisa, inside the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli park. Kite, wingfoil and windsurf all use it.
The launch is big sand with room to spare, and the parking sits close to the mouth once you take Via del Mare from Migliarino and follow the dirt road. It is a Libeccio spot: when it blows hard the sea at the mouth turns very messy, and that is exactly when people come.
W is the usual direction, S and W are the ones recommended, and the best winds run October to April. The water is shallow in places, flat to choppy, with small waves where the river meets the sea, and tide does not come into it.
It is rated for any level on paper, but a river mouth in a storm is not where you learn. Nothing here is serviced: no rescue on record, boats in the channel, a protected park behind you.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow areas are reported around the river mouth.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions do not depend on tide at Marina di Vecchiano.

Temperature

25.8°C summer · 12.5°C winter

Wetsuit

A normal wetsuit is reported off season and shorty, boardshorts or rash vest in summer; water temperature is reported at 23-27 C around early August and 12-13 C around early March.

Currents

River-mouth current is unquantified. What is consistent is that the sea at the Serchio mouth turns rough and messy in strong Libeccio.

Open sandy beach at the Serchio river mouth, with shallow, flat, chop, small-wave and medium-wave conditions, and small waves where the river meets the sea.

Your level

Listed for any level. Very strong Libeccio and a messy sea at the river mouth say otherwise, so this record treats the practical level as intermediate to advanced until a local school confirms beginners can be taught here.

Rescue

Unserviced. No lifeguard post, rescue boat or school cover was found anywhere on this beach, and the parking near the mouth is the closest a vehicle gets to the water. Plan on your own self-rescue and a long walk back up the sand.

Launch

Big sandy beach with lots of space near the Serchio river mouth; parking is close to the river mouth after taking Via del Mare from Migliarino and continuing on the dirt road.

Rules & access
2026: parking at Marina di Vecchiano is paid from 9 May to 30 September. Vecchiano residents buy a season pass for 20 EUR through the municipal portal and authorised plates go to the parking operator electronically; no non-resident tariff is published. The beach-safety ordinance n. 50/2026 that is sometimes quoted for this beach is the Piombino maritime district's, covering the coast between the Foce dell'Alma and the Fossa Camilla in the comuni of Scarlino, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo and Castagneto Carducci, and it carries no force at the Serchio mouth. The ordinance that does govern this stretch is not published, so launch corridors, bathing-season limits and any hour restriction here remain unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Come for confident strong-wind riding, not for a first lesson, unless a local school confirms it on the day.
  • Stay well clear of the river-mouth flow and of any boats.
  • Between 1 May and 30 September, check the ordinance in force and where you can legally get on the water at the Serchio mouth before you rig.
  • Take Via del Mare from Migliarino and stay on the dirt road; the parking is close to the mouth and it is a short carry.
  • Expect a wild beach, not a serviced one. Nothing like Calambrone or Tirrenia.
