When it fills in

Late, in a northerly. The northern beaches can be riding by mid-morning while Tayo is still flat, and the central and southern coast usually waits for the same system until around midday or the early afternoon. There are days when Atlit and the north are up and nothing arrives here at all. Southerly and westerly days come with the weather rather than the clock, so they need a live reading, not a habit.

Tayo is Bat Yam's kite beach on the Mediterranean, wide and sandy by central-coast standards, which is why courses and post-course practice happen there when conditions allow. The constraint is people: declared swimming beaches, the promenade, the restaurants and the beach seating all sit close to where you rig.
Northerlies work, and so do some southerly and westerly days at 10-30 kt, but the north wind arrives later and lighter here than at the beaches farther north, so check a live reading before you drive. The easterly sectors are offshore and dangerous.
In 2026 Tayo is one of the city's declared beaches with lifeguard stations manned from 17 April to 10 October, and those lifeguards are not kite rescue. It is a reasonable first spot after a course when the beach is open, the wind is steady and there is room downwind.
It is a poor one on a hot July weekend with the water full of swimmers.

Typical strength

10-30 kt

Accessible central-Israel spot, but northerlies can arrive weaker or later than farther-north beaches.
Tayo is a transition-season northerly spot with usable southerly and westerly days, and the southerly and westerly systems are the popular ones. Northerlies arrive weaker and later than at the northern beaches. Tel Aviv up the coast sees spring and autumn northerlies around 15-20 kt and winter south/west systems with waves, while July-August kiting there is restricted and patchy.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, converted from the wind range rather than measured; nothing local records what people actually fly here. The 15-20 knot transition-season northerlies put a 75-85 kg rider on 9-12 m. The 10-14 knot end is a 12 m or a foil. The stronger southerly and westerly systems at 25-30 knots take you to 7-8 m.

Direction to shore

Onshore to side-onshore in westerly and northwesterly wind; southerly and southwesterly work on the right day. Easterly sectors are offshore and dangerous.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Mediterranean open-coast beach with chop, waves, variable depth and nearby bathing zones

Tides

Microtidal Mediterranean coast; no spot-specific tide constraints found.

Temperature

29°C summer · 18°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually boardshorts/rash vest in spring through autumn; wetsuit useful in winter.

Currents

Rip currents and changing surf-beach currents are a general Israeli Mediterranean hazard; local lifeguard flags should be checked.

18–30°C water
Bat Yam water averages around 29.2 C in August and 18.8 C in January. Chop, waves and depth that changes as you go out.

Rescue

Lifeguards work the declared Bat Yam beaches through the 2026 bathing season. They are not kite rescue, so do not plan a session around them.

Launch

Wide sandy municipal beach near Laguna, south of the lifeguard and bathing area. Bat Yam has two kite beaches, Hof HaSela and Tayo, and Tayo is the busier and more popular of the pair.It is wide compared with the beaches immediately around it, which is why courses run here: a rider who drifts down still has beach to walk back up. A few hundred metres south the declared bathing beaches begin, with restaurants and seating on the sand itself.

Space

Relatively wide for the central coast, but launch space becomes unsafe when bathers, promenade activity, restaurants or beach seating are close.

Hazards riders report 9

  • breakwaters at some of the six municipal beaches
  • open exposed coast
  • crowded bathers in bathing season and warm weekends
  • nearby declared bathing beaches downwind
  • promenade, restaurants and urban beach activity
  • insufficient rigging/launch space when crowded
  • northerly wind may be weak or late
  • offshore NE/E/SE wind sectors
  • rip currents and surf-zone currents
Rules & access
2026: Tayo is one of Bat Yam's declared beaches, with lifeguard stations manned from 17 April to 10 October 2026. Obey municipality, lifeguard and inspector instructions, and expect bathing-season restrictions around the beach zones.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the clear stretch where the other kites are, south of the lifeguard and bathing area, never beside the seating or the bathers.
  • In a northerly, check a live wind reading before you leave home: Tayo often turns on late and light.
  • Work out your downwind exit before you go out, and stay in if a declared bathing beach is active downwind.
  • Give up the July and August weekends; the rigging space goes to the beach crowd and the promenade traffic.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes with conditions: local sources call it suitable for beginners only when the beach is open, wind is steady and there is enough downwind escape room, not as a first solo spot in crowded conditions.

What is the wind like?

Tayo works mainly in northerly and southwesterly wind through the transition seasons, though northerlies often arrive weaker or later than at spots farther north; easterly directions are offshore and considered dangerous.

Are there kite schools or rental?

Yes, Laguna Kitesurfing and Laguna Surf both teach mainly at Tayo Beach and provide safety gear and student insurance.

Are there rules or restrictions?

Bat Yam listed Tayo among its declared beaches with lifeguard stations from 17 April to 10 October 2026, and riders are expected to follow municipality and lifeguard instructions.

What are the main hazards?

Breakwaters at some of the city's beaches, crowded bathers in season, and offshore NE/E/SE wind sectors are the key risks to watch for.
