Poleg sits at the southern end of Netanya, and the kiting happens on the southern side, toward Wingate. It is one of Israel's main teaching beaches: broad, mostly sandy, with a large car park behind it, and on a good spring day more than 70 kites go up. That number is the spot's real character.
Rigging space is shared, the declared bathing beach is just to the north, and paragliders launch off the sandstone cliffs above. Northerlies in spring and autumn are the season, with some southerly and southwesterly days, 10-30 kt, and the easterly sectors are offshore and not to be ridden.
Watch the rocks and reef toward the south, and stay out of the bathing beach once the season is on. A good place to learn, a poor place to wander downwind on your own.

Character

mixed

fills in: The northerlies that make the season tend to be cleanest and steadiest earlier in the day and get less reliable as it goes on. Sudden drops are part of this beach, which is one more reason not to be the only kite on the water.

Typical strength

10-30 kt

Known and popular central-Sharon kite beach; reliable enough for lessons in suitable spring/autumn northerlies but can be crowded.
Poleg is a transition-season northerly beach that also works in N, S and SW. The northerly periods are spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to November, and that is when the courses run; the coast averages 15 to 20 knots then, with flat-ish water.
Summer westerlies are weak and inconsistent, and the local schools move summer students inland to the Kinneret. Winter brings south and west systems up to 30 knots with waves up to two or three metres on this coast, and is treated as advanced-only.

The quiver, in words

No local measurement of kite sizes exists. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider: a 12 m for the ordinary spring or autumn northerly, which averages 15 to 20 knots on this coast; a 9 m for the strong days and for the winter south and west systems that reach 30 knots; a 15 m if you want to ride the light summer westerlies. The working range at the beach is 10 to 30 knots.

Direction to shore

Mostly onshore to side-onshore in westerly and northwesterly sea breeze or frontal wind. Easterly sectors are offshore and dangerous.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Mediterranean sandy beach with chop, waves, variable depth and some reef/rock areas

Standing depth

Open sea, not a standing-depth lagoon. Depth varies along the beach, with shallow patches in places and deeper water elsewhere, and chop or small waves over most of it. There is no wide flat to walk out on, and the bottom turns to rock in sections toward the south and at the northern boundary of the reserve.

Tides

Microtidal Mediterranean coast; no spot-specific tide constraints found.

Temperature

27°C summer · 19°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually boardshorts/rash vest in spring through autumn; wetsuit useful in winter.

Currents

Rip currents and changing surf-beach currents are a general Israeli Mediterranean hazard; local lifeguard flags should be checked.

18–30°C water
Water averages around 27.4 C in summer and 19.4 C in winter. Chop, waves and changing depth, bathing areas next door, and some rock and reef.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Courses and beginner practice happen at Poleg because the beach is broad and mostly sandy. Beginners should stay in easy conditions and in a clear launch lane, and leave the unfamiliar downwind and rocky sections alone.

Rescue

Municipal beach services, lifeguards and first aid cover the declared bathing area at Poleg in season, and none of that is aimed at the kite zone or at kite rescue. When the wind is on there are enough riders around that a rescue is a rider-to-rider thing. Riding here alone is a bad idea.

Launch

Broad sandy beach in south Netanya; the southern side toward Wingate is used for kitesurfing.

Rules & access
2026: the southern side of Poleg toward Wingate is the area used for kitesurfing. Keep separated from the bathing beaches, obey lifeguards and inspectors, and do not ride north into the declared beach during bathing season.

Rider tips

  • Stay in the southern kite area toward Wingate and do not drift north into the declared bathing beach.
  • Learn here only with other kiters or school staff on the sand and real downwind room in front of you.
  • Keep clear of the rocks and reef to the south; leave the unknown downwind stretches until you ride upwind properly.
  • Give the cliffs a wide berth, paragliders launch off them.
  • Use the large parking lot behind the beach and carry the kite to a clear lane instead of rigging in the middle of the crowd.
