Canoa Quebrada is the beach under the red cliffs on the east coast of Ceara, and it is an ocean spot: chop, shorebreak, and a long reef that uncovers in front of the village at very low tide.
East wind, trade with a thermal on top, 14-22 knots through a season that runs from the second half of the year into January; 20-30 kt shows up between September and December. Mornings are side-shore and afternoons swing onshore or side-onshore, so ride early. The beach is the problem.
At high tide it shrinks to almost nothing, at low tide there is plenty of sand, and the barracas own the middle: kiting in front of them is not allowed (2025), and the kite beach proper is past Barraca Bom Motivo toward the cemetery.
Flat water is a downwind away, from Barraca Chega Mais to the Rio Jaguaribe mouth, where low tide gives about 4 hours of flat riding and a buggy brings you back. The village does nightlife well and tourists wander the waterline all day. There are lessons here, but the beach itself is intermediate and up.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No. This is open Atlantic with chop and a shorebreak, and past the break there is nothing to stand on. At the lowest tides a long reef flat uncovers in front of the village, walkable but not somewhere to be dropped on. No measured depth.

Tides

Tidal Atlantic beach; the beach becomes small at high tide and has much more space at low tide. The nearby Rio Jaguaribe mouth has about 4 hours of flat-water riding at low tide.

Temperature

25-30°C summer · 25-30°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit; shorts/lycra are normally enough.

Rescue

On the Canoa to Rio Jaguaribe downwind a local rider can follow you on the water and a buggy tracks you from the beach for the ride back; no daily rescue service on the main beach has been confirmed.

Launch

The kite beach is near the cemetery, past Restaurante/Barraca Bom Motivo. The downwind starts around Barraca Chega Mais and finishes at Barra do Rio Jaguaribe.

Rules & access
2025: zones apply and kiting is not allowed in front of the barracas; no municipal ordinance is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig past Barraca Bom Motivo toward the cemetery; the stretch in front of the barracas is off limits.
  • Look at the tide before you walk down; at high tide the beach is too narrow to rig safely.
  • Ride the morning side-shore; by afternoon the wind has gone onshore.
  • For flat water, book a guide for the Canoa to Rio Jaguaribe downwind and run it around low tide; the mouth is flat for about 4 hours.
  • 8-12 m covers the windy months; bring 12-16 m outside them.
  • Lessons run on a shallow lagoon, not on the main beach. Ask where a school actually teaches before you pay.
  • At the bottom of a big low a reef uncovers in front of the village; know where it is before you ride the inside.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Canoa Quebrada?

The windy season runs July to January, with east trade and thermal wind around 14-22 knots; wind is weaker from February to June.

Is Canoa Quebrada suitable for beginners?

The main beach is better treated as intermediate-plus because of the wind angle, high-tide width and shorebreak, though local instructors can take beginners out safely.

What is the wind like?

Wind is side-shore in the morning and turns side-onshore to onshore in the afternoon, averaging 14-22 knots in season.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

As of 2025, kiting is not allowed directly in front of the beach barracas, and the safer kite area is set away from them.

Is the launch space limited?

The sandy beach is tide dependent, becoming narrow at high tide and much wider at low tide.
