On the clock

11:00 · 19:00

For Mazara del Vallo in general, the summer NW sea breeze reportedly rises around 11:00 and drops around 19:00. No onset log for Capo Feto alone was found.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Capo Feto is west of Mazara del Vallo on the south-west coast of Sicily, inside a coastal wetland and dune reserve, and it is a wild beach rather than a kite resort. What you get is shallow clear water, white sand, almost nobody on it and a local school scene; what you pay is sandy-track access and no beach infrastructure.
The summer NW thermal, the Maestrale, is the best-documented setup, reported around 16-19 kt, and Ponente and Scirocco are both ridden here too. Over the shallow belt the water can go glassy, above all close to shore, though chop and small waves also get reported, so treat it as mixed rather than lagoon-flat.
Beginners learn here with Kitesurf Mazara and its rescue boat; an independent rider deals with the cross-off angle on NW, the gusty offshore N days and the current Coast Guard bathing and kite rules alone.
The reserve status is not decoration: stay off the dunes and out of the ponds, use the authorized areas, and expect no cafe, no lockers and slow emergency access. Bring your own water and shade.

fills in: For Mazara del Vallo in general, the summer NW sea breeze reportedly rises around 11:00 and drops around 19:00. No onset log for Capo Feto alone was found.

Typical strength

16-19 kt for the summer NW thermal, with individual sessions reported at 15 and 18 kt, and a broader range of 10-30 kt also reported for Capo Feto.

The summer NW thermal, the Maestrale, is the best-documented setup and flattens the water over the shallow belt. N and NE Tramontana and Grecale go very gusty and offshore. Scirocco and Ponente are both rideable, with Scirocco pushing more wave and chop toward Cala Spaghetti.
The wind season is reported two ways, March-October and December-May. The summer NW thermal is the pattern that holds up locally.

Also on record

22.8 kt is quoted for the spot with too little method behind it to treat as a local average; unconfirmed.

The quiver, in words

No local quiver log; indicative for a 75-85 kg rider. The 16-19 kt summer NW thermal is a 10-12 m day, and 12 m if you are on the light side of that. Ponente or Scirocco at 20-25 kt is 9 m.On the gusty 25-30 kt end, 7-8 m, though those are usually the N and NE days you should not be riding here alone anyway. Flat shallow water means you can go a size down from what the same wind would need in chop.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

mixed

Standing depth

A standable shallow belt runs near shore: the first 100 m from shore are standable, plus another shoal about 500 m offshore (reported in 2017).

Tides

Tide is not a planning factor. The shallow belt is reported flat at both high and low water. No local tidal-range measurement was found.

Temperature

25.2°C summer · 14.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a light shorty in peak summer for many riders; full wetsuit needed in winter, when Mazara del Vallo average sea temperature drops to about 14.4 C in February.

Currents

The Capo Feto area was judged favorable for wind and marine-current safety when the kitesurf ordinance was drawn up; no quantified current data was found.

15–26°C water
The riding area is a shallow sandy coastal reserve, not an enclosed lagoon. Very flat water over the shallow sand belt is reported, though the spot also gets classified as chop and small waves. Poseidonia deposits build up on the shore, and you may have to cross a dark line or a heavy bank of seagrass to get in.
Rocks are reported near the lighthouse, and rocks and breakwaters toward Cala Spaghetti at the end of the gulf.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Shallow flat water plus school rescue: beginners ride here alongside intermediate and advanced riders. On your own, treat NW Maestrale with caution, since it can run side-off or offshore-leaning, stay off the gusty N and NE days, and use the school or the authorized area.

The scene

What riders come here for

beginnersfreeridefreestylelearning with school supportfoiluncrowded scenic sessions
A wild local-school beach, not a resort. Hard enough to reach that mass tourism stays away: one October visit turned up a single other kiter. Summer brings more beach users and school activity, and still far less infrastructure than Lo Stagnone.

Rescue

Kitesurf Mazara Kite School works the spot and keeps an inflatable rescue boat in the water, free to riders on its rental gear and not guaranteed to independent riders on their own kit. Outside school operations, no public rescue service at this remote beach is confirmed. The 2026 Coast Guard bathing ordinance gives 1530 for sea emergencies.

Launch

A long, wild sandy beach in the Capo Feto wetland reserve, reached on unpaved sandy tracks off Via Capo Feto and near the lighthouse. No normal beach services, no formal parking: bring water, shade and whatever else the day needs.

Hazards riders report 7

  • remote location with unpaved sandy access roads and limited facilities/emergency access
  • Cross-off/offshore wind risk on NW/Maestrale depending on exact launch and wind angle; N/NE Tramontana/Grecale is reported as gusty and offshore and is discouraged by local sources.
  • Remote access by sandy, unpaved, potholed tracks with limited facilities and no normal beach services.
  • Poseidonia/seagrass deposits on the shore can be heavy and smelly and may have to be crossed to enter the water.
  • Rocks near the lighthouse and rocks/breakwaters toward Cala Spaghetti/end of the gulf are reported by rider sources.
  • Protected wetland/reserve environment: avoid dunes, ponds, bird habitat and any zoned-off areas.
  • General 2026 bathing-season rules restrict navigation/kitesurf inside the 300 m bathing zone except via authorized launch corridors or allowed free-beach situations.
Rules & access
2026 Guardia Costiera Mazara del Vallo bathing ordinance: during bathing season, the sea area up to 300 m from shore is reserved for bathing and, from 08:00-20:00, navigation by vessels including kitesurf and windsurf is prohibited except via marked/authorized launch corridors or allowed free-beach provisions.
Kitesurf is allowed only in daylight, prohibited at night/reduced visibility and in waters closed to bathing, minimum age is 14, a suitable buoyancy aid must be worn, kites must not be left unattended unless at least one line is disconnected, only one kite may transit a launch corridor at a time, corridors are for launch/landing only and swimming is prohibited inside them.
2026 ordinance also carries special Cala Polpi/Cala Spaghetti Capo Feto bathing/boating zoning, excluding windsurf/kitesurf from the boating anchorage/transit exception and leaving kite-specific provisions applicable.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Talk to Kitesurf Mazara or another local before your first session; with side-off wind and reserve zoning the launch choice matters.
  • Bring water and shade, plus food and a way to self-rescue. Nothing on this beach is equipped.
  • Skip Tramontana and Grecale N-NE days unless a local school confirms conditions; gusts run 5 to 30 kt and the orientation is offshore.
  • Read the 2026 Guardia Costiera Mazara del Vallo bathing ordinance and the posted beach signs before launching in summer.
  • Wear a buoyancy aid: the 2026 ordinance requires one, sets the minimum age at 14, and gives 1530 for sea emergencies.
  • Keep the car off the dunes and the wetland, and expect sandy tracks, potholes and improvised parking.
  • If the wind angle is wrong, Lo Stagnone is about 20 km away and is the flat-water fallback.
  • One kite for a summer week here is a 10 or 12 m; the thermal sits in the mid-to-high teens most afternoons.

Getting there

Airport

Trapani-Birgi (TPS) is the nearest practical airport; Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO) is the larger alternative.

Route

Get to Mazara del Vallo, then west and south-west along Via Capo Feto and Lungomare Fata Morgana and on over sandy unpaved tracks toward the lighthouse. The last dirt section takes roughly 10 minutes to drive and is reported passable in an ordinary car, though it is potholed and parking is improvised.Take a rental car; there is no service at the beach and no public transport to it.

Transfer

About 45-60 min by car from Trapani-Birgi to Mazara del Vallo, about 1 h 15-1 h 25 from Palermo airport to Mazara del Vallo, then add local driving time and slow sandy-track access to Capo Feto.

Staying

Stay in Mazara del Vallo for closest town services, restaurants and apartments; Tonnarella/Mazara beachfront accommodation is practical if combining beach time, while Marsala/Lo Stagnone works for a kite-focused trip with more schools and wind options.

No-wind days

Capo Feto birdwatching/nature walks, Mazara del Vallo old town/Kasbah and Museum of the Dancing Satyr, Marsala salt pans and Lo Stagnone/Mozia, and Selinunte/Cave di Cusa archaeology.
