Laguna de Chascomus is a freshwater lagoon about 120 km south of Buenos Aires on Ruta 2, beside the city of Chascomus in Buenos Aires Province, with a paved road all the way round it, so you drive to whichever shore the wind is coming onto.
The water is flat to choppy, shallow near the teaching areas and free of current or tide, which is why the schools use it for first lessons and why freestylers from the city come out at weekends; wave riders have no reason to come.
Wind is 12-25 knots on a good day and gusty by at least one account, from the north-east quadrant (NE, ENE or E) at the listed launch, November through March the core months with April and May on the shoulder.
The rules are real: Decreto 900/25 zones the lagoon, the bathing zone runs 150 m out (100 m when the lagoon is low) and is buoyed, and kites go in through the habilitated nautical launches with a life jacket on.
Launch space is the open question: wide and empty at some access points, cramped at others, so ask the school which shore works for the forecast before you unpack. Weed sits in the shallows in places. Summer weekends and long weekends are the busy times, and rooms in town go on long weekends.

Typical strength

Indicative range, no local measurement: 12-25 kt on a day worth driving for, and gusty rather than clean, so the lulls and the peaks sit several knots apart. No weather station on the lagoon publishes wind statistics, and the nearest one that does has no historical data, so nothing here rests on a measured average.

Regular, and gusty by at least one account.
The listed best months are November to March: November, December, January, February, March. Which side of the lagoon you rig on depends on the forecast direction.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local measurement, sized off the 12-25 kt range for a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m at 14-18 kt, 9-10 m from 20 to 25 kt, 7 m if it goes over. Flat fresh water gives less lift than salt, and the wind gusts, so most riders end up one size up from what the average would suggest.

Direction to shore

Any direction can be used by driving round the lagoon road to the right shore; the listed spot wants NE, ENE or E.

Dominant direction

NE, ENE or E at the listed spot; the municipality's own climate text puts the prevailing wind in the east quadrant.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

freshwater lagoon with flat water and chop

Standing depth

Shallow and free of current near the teaching areas, which is why first lessons happen here. Depth at each individual access point around the roughly 30 km shoreline is not documented, and weed sits in some of the shallows.

Tides

None. It is a lagoon; nothing here depends on tide.

Temperature

23°C summer · 10°C winter

Wetsuit

Water is about 23 C in summer and about 10 C in winter; neoprene from autumn to spring.

Currents

None reported.

Freshwater, shallow near the teaching areas, no current, flat to choppy depending on the day. No tide to think about.

Rescue

The kite school teaches off a motorboat and uses it for pick-ups, which is the practical rescue on a lesson day. The Seguridad Lacustre patrol covers the lagoon as mobile back-up while the summer guarded bathing service runs. Out of season there is nothing on the water; the national emergency number is 911.

Launch

A paved road rings the whole lagoon, about 30 km of it, so you drive to whichever shore the wind is coming onto and launch from the beach or the habilitated nautical access there. The schools pick the shore that suits the forecast; rigging space varies a lot between access points.

Space

Two accounts disagree: wide open shore with few people in one, a small launch and landing area in the other.

Hazards riders report 5

  • shallow/weedy patches in parts of the lagoon
  • Small or variable launch space at some access points
  • Gusts; at least one rider review complains about them.
  • Bathers and fishermen inside marked balneario areas
  • Use only habilitated nautical access points for kitesurf, boards and boats
Rules & access
  • 2025: Decreto No. 900/25 sets the zoning under Ordenanza No. 1320/1981: balneario areas and a bather and fishing zone 150 m out, buoyed, which drops to 100 m when the lagoon is low.
  • 2026: the municipal safety guidance has kitesurf, kayaks, motor boats and boards entering only through the habilitated nautical launches, life jackets on.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Count on about 1.5 hours from Buenos Aires City down Autovia 2; it is a day trip, and on long weekends book the room first.
  • If the coast has the wrong direction, come here: the lagoon road lets you launch on whichever shore takes the wind.
  • Ask Escuela de Kite Chascomus or a local rider which access point works for the forecast before you rig; NE, ENE or E favour the listed spot.
  • Go in only at the habilitated nautical launches, life jacket on; the 2026 municipal guidance names kitesurf specifically.
  • Stay outside the buoyed bathing zone, 150 m from shore (100 m when the lagoon is low), and away from the guardavida sectors in summer.
  • Do not expect a big rigging area at every access point; one account calls the launch small, another calls the shore wide and empty.
  • Watch for weed in the shallows and for gusts; the wind is regular but not clean.
  • The road round the lagoon is about 30 km, so allow twenty minutes to move to the other shore if you rig on the wrong one.

Getting there

Airport

Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini (EZE) or Jorge Newbery (AEP); Chascomus also has a local aerodrome, but no commercial airport service.
