The spot

Daugavgrīva sits on the west bank where the Daugava meets the Gulf of Riga, inside Riga's own city limits, in the Bolderāja district. It is the hardest of the greater-Riga beaches to reach: cars park well back from the water and you carry the gear in on foot. What the walk buys you is a wave and freeride beach ridden on kite, kitefoil or wingfoil, not a place to take a first lesson.

Wind and alternatives

The wind here runs mainly northwest and west. Riders learning around Riga go to Vecāķi or Bērzciems instead, which are flatter and far easier to get to.

Harbor and hazards

The river mouth carries its own current where the Daugava empties into the bay, and this channel is the entrance to Riga's harbour: a Swedish fortress went up here in 1641 to command it, and whether commercial traffic still passes close enough to matter at the beach is unconfirmed. Crowd levels, wind statistics and hazards specific to this beach have not been written down anywhere.

No anemometer on this stretch of coast publishes a long record, so there is no honest local number. The nearest station with a statistical series sits inland at Riga airport and averages around 7 kt over the year, which reflects the city basin more than the coast. What riders come for are the frontal NW to W blows; how often those reach kiteable strength at the river mouth is unconfirmed.

Sea temperature peaks near 19 C in July and drops to about 1 C in February, so only high summer is short-suit riding and the rest of the year is thick rubber with hood and gloves.

Rescue

Daugavgriva is one of Riga's official bathing beaches and has a staffed rescue post through the season, lifeguards watching the water daily from 10:00 to 22:00; the 2026 season opened on 19 May.

That cover is aimed at the buoyed swim area, not at a kiter well offshore, and the general emergency number is 112.

Remember the car park is about a kilometre back along a boardwalk, so anyone bringing help or a spare kite is arriving on foot.

Launch

Beach launch on the west bank at the mouth of the Daugava, in Riga's Bolderaja/Daugavgriva district. Parking is free but sits roughly a kilometre back from the water, joined to the beach by a boardwalk path, so the gear goes in on foot.The beach itself is an official Blue Flag bathing beach with changing cabins, toilets, benches, bins and a seasonal volleyball court, and the swim area is marked with buoys.

Official bathing-beach rules apply on the sand and in the marked swim area: boats, windsurf boards and kiteboards may not be used inside it, and swimming is contained by buoys.

Tents, fires, dogs, digging and driving onto the beach are also out.

The staffed 2026 season opened on 19 May with lifeguards on duty 10:00 to 22:00, so through the summer any ride has to start and stay outside the buoyed zone.
