The spot

Location and launch

Ragaciems sits on the western side of the Gulf of Riga, and the official launch is Ragaciema pludmale at the end of Zvejnieku iela. Sand bottom, shallow a long way out, but a dolomite shoal and loose stones sit close to shore, so walk the entry before you rig.

Wind and water

Gulf water here is calmer than the open Baltic coast, and a hard NNW still stacks up enough of a wave to jump off, which is why the freeride and foil crowd bothers with the drive.

The wind sector on record contradicts itself: W, N or NNW; NW to N as the favourable sector; south wind through the colder months. Ask on the beach before you trust any of it.

What nobody mentions is the pull along the shore in a strong NNW, which will walk your board downwind while you swim.

The season people ride is May to October, with summer water around 18-19 C and no lifeguard at the beach. Beginners should bring an instructor or go to Engure.

Sheltered Gulf of Riga conditions are generally calmer than open Baltic coast spots, but strong NNW wind can build a usable wave/kicker.

The kite season runs May to October. South-wind sessions turn up in June and July, and the colder months carry the higher average wind, so the months people ride and the months with the most wind are not the same.

Ragaciems is on the P128 coast road between Riga/Jurmala and Engure, 40.8 km by road from Riga Airport. There is no direct airport bus; public transport goes through Riga bus station to Kalnini/Ragaciems, and the direct hourly bus from Riga to Kalnini takes about 1 hour 13 minutes.
