When it fills in

Afternoons. The best wind here is usually the afternoon wind, and on a summer northerly a session reportedly runs three to four hours once it fills. Mornings are often dead. Rather than trusting the forecast hour, watch the West Point reading and leave when it shows 15 knots or better.

Golden Gardens is the kite spot inside Seattle: an 88-acre park in Ballard with a west-facing beach on Puget Sound, the Olympics across the water and a big grass field to rig on. It only works on north through northwest. Anything with south in it is shadowed by the bluff and the marina, and a northeasterly blows straight offshore.
Shilshole Bay Marina sits immediately downwind of the launch, and that single fact shapes the spot: ride upwind confidently before you come, and remember the flood current sets south towards it.
Water is flat to choppy most days, about 5 in January and about 17 from June to September, and above roughly 20 knots it stacks into rolling swell of five or six feet. The season riders use runs May to September, peaking in July and August, by which point the beach belongs to everyone else too.
Old dock pilings sit submerged off the north point at high tide.

Typical strength

Direction-dependent to the point of being binary. The bluff and the marina to the south block anything with south in it, so it works on north through northwest and nothing else. Summer northerlies are the steadier ones and winter wind is bumpier but sunnier; the first day behind a high-pressure system tends to be the strongest.
Sessions reportedly run three to four hours once it fills.
May to September is the window most riders use, peaking in July and August. It is ridden outside that too, and autumn through spring the beach is far quieter.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Reportedly shallow inside on the lower tides; how far out you can stand is unconfirmed

Tides

An incoming tide is the usual pick and low tide gives the most beach. When the difference between low and high is ten feet or more the current becomes the dominant factor and riders go north for a downwinder instead.

Temperature

Summer About 17 from June to September

Winter About 5 in January

Wetsuit

A suit all year — around a 4/3 in the warm months and thicker with a hood in winter.

Currents

Strong tidal current, setting south on the flood, straight towards the marina. It makes a self-rescue harder than the water looks.

Flat to choppy on a normal day. Above roughly 20 knots it stacks up into rolling swell of five or six feet; clean swell needs strong wind on an ebb.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
You need to hold upwind reliably before launching here. Shilshole Bay Marina sits immediately downwind and there is nowhere good to wash up, and the current and the boat traffic add to that.

The scene

What riders come here for

urban sessionsfreestylefoilingfreestyle on the flat sectionssummer thermalsafter-work riding
A city park first and a kite spot second. On a sunny windy day the beach fills with everyone in Seattle and the kites share it; spectators are part of the deal. From autumn to spring it empties out.

Rescue

No patrol. The marina immediately downwind is a hazard rather than a backstop, and the flood current sets south towards it, so drifting is not a neutral outcome. Emergencies go through 911; the park is inside the city, so response is quick once someone calls, but nobody on the beach is watching the water for you.

Launch

The north tip of the park. On lower tides there is sand to work with; at high tide people rig and launch from the grass field behind the beach, keeping the kite around 75 degrees so it clears the shrubs.Large grass area for rigging, plenty of riding room, toilets and showers, and a park lot that fills on warm weekends.

Rules & access
2026: the park is open 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. No kite-specific restriction was found for Golden Gardens, either on the park's own listing or in the department's published rules, and riders are directed to the north launch by custom rather than by regulation. Organised or commercial use of a Seattle park needs a special-use permit, which is the rule a school or an event would run into rather than an individual rider. Confirm on site before assuming it is unregulated.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Wait for the West Point reading to show 15 knots or better before you drive over. A forecast alone is not enough here.
  • At high tide you rig and launch off the grass. Keep the kite near 75 degrees so it clears the shrubs.
  • Stay off the water when a regatta is running out of Shilshole.
  • Parking is the first casualty of a warm weekend. Come early, or come in autumn.
  • When the range between low and high is ten feet or more, that is the day to go north for a downwinder instead of riding laps here.
  • Come for the afternoon. Mornings usually have nothing, and the useful window is a few hours once it fills.
