Grande Plage de La Ciotat is a town beach in the Bay of La Ciotat that only really works when the wind goes into the southeast.
The SE Marin at 20-25 kt is the day you want: side-onshore, chop on the inside and small to medium waves standing up in front of the breakwaters; E and ESE work too, W, SW and S get ridden, but pure south is straight onshore and technical close in. Mistral is offshore, so do not ride it here.
The launch is the problem: a narrow strip of sand with the road right behind it, gusty near the beach because of the buildings, and in winter people rig on the roadside or the esplanade when the beach has gone.
Kites are banned within 300 m of the beach in July and August, the summer holiday season, and the schools run boat support to get past that line; the surf-school zone from Avenue de Provence to the Langlois jetty is off limits at all times.
Best months are October to May, when the beach is yours and the wind is on. The water goes murky after heavy rain, and this is a spot for riders who already know what they are doing, not a place to learn.

Character

Typical strength

The SE Marin sea breeze is described as ideal at 20-25 kt.

Good in strong southeast/east with waves by the breakwaters; wind near the beach can be gusty because the road and buildings are close, and offshore Mistral is hazardous.
October-May is the practical season, because kiting near the beach is restricted in summer; the wind itself also blows April-October, so the wind season and the access season do not line up.

The quiver, in words

Indicative only, no local kite-size guidance published and nothing measured on the beach: at 75-85 kg the 20-25 kt SE Marin is a 7-9 m twin-tip day, 12-18 kt sessions call for 10-12 m, and 6 m is the size to have when the Marin overpowers.

Direction to shore

SE is side-onshore and the reference direction; pure south is more directly onshore and technical near the beach; Mistral is offshore.

Dominant direction

E, ESE and SE are the directions that work most reliably; W, SW and S are rideable.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Standable at both high and low tide, with a shallow walk-in. There are rocks in the shallows where you launch and land, so look before you wade. This is an open Mediterranean beach, not a lagoon.

Tides

No major tide dependence for kitesurfing is reported, although the beach can narrow or disappear for rigging in easterly/high-water situations.

Temperature

23.7°C summer · 13.5°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer: usually no full suit, but a shorty/light top can be useful in wind or cold-current days. Winter/off-season: full wetsuit.

Currents

Occasional cold current is reported; no persistent current pattern.

14–24°C water
Chop plus small to medium waves; southeast/east wind can make waves in front of the breakwaters, while other directions are generally choppy.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate to advanced only; you need to be a confirmed rider. The narrow launch, the road, the breakwaters, the surf zone and the summer ban rule out independent beginners.

Rescue

Grande Plage is not covered by a summer lifeguard post, and that is unconfirmed against a municipal source. Local kite schools run boat support to get riders past the 300 m summer limit, where the wind is steadier and less gusty. No public rescue for independent riders was found.

Launch

Launch from the south-end kite area of Grande Plage. The beach is narrow and the road runs about 5 m behind it; in winter, when high water takes the sand, riders rig on the roadside or on the esplanade. Free parking at Saint-Jean, roughly 200 m away.

  • Water quality can be affected after rain.
  • Very limited setup space, with the road about 5 m behind the beach.
  • Rocks in the shallows at the launch and landing.
  • No summer lifeguard post on Grande Plage.

Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing is prohibited within 300 m of Grande Plage in July and August, the summer holiday season, and the schools use boat support to ride outside that band. The zone reserved for the surf school is off limits at all times, described at one end as Avenue de Provence and the La Vague restaurant and at the other as the Langlois jetty and breakwater. In light wind, do not let yourself drift into the surf area at all. The beach is a recognised FFVL kite site. The 2024 La Ciotat coastal-police decree exists but is published as a scanned image, so its kite-specific wording could not be read.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Wait for SE or E; pure south is straight onshore near the beach and harder than it looks.
  • Rig in the south-end kite area, and never park a kite at zenith with the road that close behind you.
  • Stay out of the surf-school zone between Avenue de Provence and the Langlois jetty.
  • In July and August the 300 m ban applies: book a school boat or ride somewhere else.
  • After heavy rain, check the water-quality notices before going in.
  • Parking by the beach is free in winter and paid from May to September.
  • In light wind, do not drift down into the surf area; that is where the conflict happens.
  • Parking by the beach is free in winter and paid from May to September; Saint-Jean, about 200 m away, is free.
  • Look at the shallows before you walk out. There are rocks in the launch area.
