When it fills in

Synoptic wind: neither the Mistral nor the Marin arrives at a set hour, and both can hold for a day or more once they are in. There is no summer sea breeze to plan around here, because the bay is closed to kites all summer.

Les Lecques is a winter spot. The Baie des Lecques at Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer is closed to kites during the bathing season, so the window runs October to March: for 2026 the beach is open to kiting from 1 January to 14 March and again from 16 October, through to 14 March 2027. Rig at the southern end of the beach, at the corner of the Hôtel Tapis de Sable by parking plage 3, and stay outside the 300 m zone once you are on the water.
The east-west beach wants wind from SW round to SE; a Marin from the south or southeast gives the powered freeride and wave days, with chop building across the bay. NW Mistral works, but it comes in more onshore and the shore handling is the technical part.
The only wind figure on record is an average of 22.5 kt, unconfirmed and with no typical range behind it. Water is 22.3 C in summer and 14.4 C in winter, so for the months that matter you are in a full suit. Rated intermediate: not a beginner beach, and no rescue service for independent riders has been confirmed.

fills in: Synoptic wind: neither the Mistral nor the Marin arrives at a set hour, and both can hold for a day or more once they are in. There is no summer sea breeze to plan around here, because the bay is closed to kites all summer.

Typical strength

22.5 kt average, unconfirmed; no typical range recorded.

Best in south or southeast for powered wave/freeride conditions; less forgiving in Mistral/NW, with chop and technical shore handling.
Kiting is allowed outside the bathing season only: 1 January to 14 March 2026, then 16 October 2026 to 14 March 2027. In practice the season is October to March.

Direction to shore

S to SE is side-onshore to onshore; SW is side-shore/side-on; NW Mistral is more onshore and technical.

Dominant direction

SW round to SE suits the east-west beach; south and southeast are the best directions. NW Mistral works but is more technical.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The spot is rated intermediate. The seasonal restriction, marked nearshore area, choppy open water and technical Mistral conditions make it unsuitable for unsupervised beginners.

Rescue

Nobody is watching the water in the kite season. The Lecques posts are staffed for the bathing season only — in 2024 that meant Wednesdays, weekends and holidays 10:00 to 18:00 from 8 May to 30 June, every day 09:00 to 19:00 from 1 July to 1 September, then Wednesdays and weekends 10:00 to 18:00 to 22 September — while kites are allowed from 16 October to 14 March.
Outside the posted zones and hours the town states that swimming and water activities are at your own risk. The sea emergency number is 196.

Launch

Beach departures are from the southern end of Plage des Lecques, at the corner of the Hôtel Tapis de Sable by parking plage 3; the launch is reportedly close to the Dégouttant stream mouth.

  • Seasonal restriction: kite access only outside the bathing season.
  • Respect the marked 300 m area and beach departure point.
  • Chop and waves in winter southerly or southeasterly wind.
  • NW Mistral can be more onshore and technical.
  • Edges of the bay and nearby users, including bathers outside the authorized season.
  • No lifeguard cover at all during the kite window: the posts are staffed only in the bathing season
Rules & access
Every year the Baie des Lecques kitesurf site opens outside the bathing season only, 16 October to 14 March, which for 2026 means 1 January to 14 March and then 16 October 2026 through to 14 March 2027. Beach departures are from the southern end of Plage des Lecques, at the corner of the Hotel Tapis de Sable by parking plage 3, and the riding area is outside the 300 m band.
That band is not conditional on buoyage: along the whole commune it is a continuous 300 m strip that bathers may not pass and inside which every craft is held to 5 knots. The kite-specific text is municipal order 2020.12.1136 of 1 December 2020, on kitesurf, foil and similar activities on Plage des Lecques; its content was not obtained.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig at the southern end of Plage des Lecques, at the Hôtel Tapis de Sable corner by parking plage 3; that is the only permitted beach departure.
  • Check the posted opening dates before you drive: 1 January to 14 March 2026, then 16 October 2026 to 14 March 2027, and nothing in between.
  • Come on a south or southeast day; that is the clean setup here.
  • Do not pick a NW Mistral day to learn the spot; it comes in more onshore and the shore handling is the hard part.
  • Stay outside the 300 m band once you are on the water; the beach launch corner is the only sanctioned crossing point.
  • The 16 October to 14 March window comes back every year, so the dates are worth remembering rather than looking up each season.
  • Ride with someone. The lifeguard posts shut long before the kite season opens, and 196 is the only number you have.
