Houlgate is a wide town beach on the Cote Fleurie, north-facing, and the wind you want sits anywhere from west through north-east: W to NW side-onshore, N straight on, NE side-on again. South-sector wind is offshore, and the only people out then are the lesson groups behind the school's boat.
At low tide the sand holds natural pools sheltered from the waves, flat and standable; on the way through mid tide the baïnes fill for an hour or two of shallow flat water, and around high tide it is chop and small waves with some standing depth.
The catch is the river mouth: strong current on the outgoing tide and at high water, plus boats. In E/NE wind the Vaches Noires cliffs disturb the flow, and it can blow 5-10 knots more than forecast.
October to March is the wind season, with a reported 21.8-knot average whose basis is unconfirmed; summer gives a thermal of about 16-17 knots late in the evening.
From 1 May to 30 September a 150 m channel between the Rue Sebastien-de-Neufville groin and Rue du Drochon is the only lane for kites inside the 300 m band, once the buoys are in; the channels are drawn around the swimming zones fixed by a 2020 municipal order.
Lessons run from age 12 with radio coaching from the local school at 78 Rue des Bains.

Character

fills in: Late evening for the reported summer thermal; otherwise null.

Typical strength

A summer thermal of about 16-17 knots late in the evening is reported; otherwise no typical range is published.

Generally favorable from W to NE, but E/NE can be disturbed by the Vaches Noires cliffs and may read 5-10 knots stronger than forecast tools.
The wind season runs October to March. There is no wind station on Houlgate beach.
The nearest long-run records are inland at Deauville-Saint-Gatien, about 8 knots over the year with mean gusts near 21, and the coastal station at Merville-Franceville, 7 knots over its two years of readings before it stopped reporting, so any annual average quoted for Houlgate is regional and not measured here.
The school teaches from the beach and takes lessons offshore by boat when the wind is in the S sector; it reopens in early March and works through to autumn, which is the opposite half of the year from the best wind.

Thermal or synoptic

synoptic; offshore directions require boat-supported lessons.

The quiver, in words

Nothing is published for the beach itself, so this is indicative from the wind the spot actually gets rather than a local measurement. A 75-85 kg rider on a twintip is on 11-12 m for the 10-16 knot summer evening thermal, 9-10 m for the 15-22 knots that carry most of the October-March season, and 7-8 m once it is over 25. E and NE days are the ones that catch people out: the cliff effect adds 5-10 knots to the forecast, so pick the smaller kite before you walk across the sand.

Direction to shore

On the north-facing Cote Fleurie beach, W to NW are side-onshore, N is onshore, NE is side-onshore, and S-sector winds are offshore.

Dominant direction

W through NE are preferred; O, NO, N and NE are also listed, along with WSW/SW to W and NW.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Standable in low-tide basins; partial standing depth at high tide.

Tides

Works at low and high tide; mid tide can form shallow baïnes/natural basins for one to two hours, and small coefficients around 30 can leave them full longer.

Temperature

19.3°C summer · 8.5°C winter

Wetsuit

3/2 to 4/3 in summer depending on wind; hooded 5/4 or 6/5 with boots, gloves and hood in winter.

Currents

Strong current is reported near the river mouth on outgoing tide and at high tide.

8–21°C water
Sandy beach with low-tide natural pools sheltered from waves; flat at low tide and choppy/small-wave conditions around high tide.

Your level

Lessons run from age 12. The beach gets described as anything from beginner-friendly to intermediate-only, because the river current and the tide states take some reading.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

2026: two seasonal beach posts, Le Temple and Le Casino, staffed by SNSM lifeguards with a paddle board, an inflatable rescue boat and a quad between them. The Casino post is manned weekends and public holidays from 1 May, 11:30-18:30; both posts open daily from 4 July. Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water, which covers the whole of the good wind season. At sea, call 196 or VHF channel 16; from the beach, 112. The school runs its lessons with radios and puts a boat out for offshore S-sector conditions, and that boat is for its own students.

Launch

Wide sandy launch on Plage de Houlgate in front of the town; the school is at 78 Rue des Bains. Riders use the Temple car park next to the local kite association. Two riding sectors are in use: one past the lifeguard post towards Dives-sur-Mer, the other beyond the Casino and its post towards the cliffs.

Rules & access
2026: a maritime-prefecture order regulating navigation in Houlgate's 300 m coastal band sets three seasonal channels, active 1 May-30 September once the buoys are placed: a 150 m-wide channel between the Rue Sebastien-de-Neufville groin and the Rue du Drochon reserved exclusively for kitesurf and windsurf; an 88 m-wide channel east of the Rue des Bains-Chauds open to windsurf and other non-motorised craft but explicitly excluding kitesurf; and a 47 m-wide channel west of the Rue Dupont-de-l'Eure for motorised craft. Outside these channels, navigation, mooring and beach-craft circulation are restricted in the 300 m band, and speed inside the channels is capped at 5 knots; the order applies only once the seasonal buoyage is physically in place. A separate municipal order (n°20-08, 8 July 2020) sets the two supervised-swimming-zone boundaries and dates that this channel scheme is built around.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the low- to mid-tide basins for flat, shallow water; they hold for an hour or two, longer on small coefficients around 30.
  • Stay away from the river mouth on the outgoing tide and at high water; the current is strong, more so with SW/W wind behind it.
  • In E or NE wind, add 5-10 knots to the forecast for the cliff effect and size down.
  • From 1 May to 30 September, launch and ride only in the 150 m kite channel between the Rue Sebastien-de-Neufville groin and Rue du Drochon; the 88 m channel by Rue des Bains-Chauds is windsurf only.
  • In S-sector wind do not launch from the beach; it is offshore, and the school takes lessons out by boat.
  • Park at the Temple car park by the kite association; the two sectors run from past the lifeguard post towards Dives-sur-Mer and from beyond the Casino post towards the cliffs.
  • Lifeguards only cover the beach from 1 May at weekends and holidays, then daily from 4 July. The October-to-March wind season has no cover at all, so ride with someone.
  • On a big coefficient at high water the sand runs out and the shore break lands on the wall; time your session for the ebb instead.
