Hourtin Port is the beginner end of Lac de Carcans-Hourtin and one of only two legal kite zones on the lake, the other being Lachanau. The kite beach is just south of the tourist beach, behind a wooden barrier, with parking, shops and amenities a short walk away.
Freshwater, no tide, flat to choppy, and you can reportedly still stand more than 100 m out; the standing area runs to about 2 km by 800 m.
The summer thermal is the catch: it starts east in the morning, swings northwest around midday and builds through the afternoon, but on a normal day it is 8-15 knots, so bring the 11-14 m2 or a foil. September-October depressions are a different animal, with 35-40 knots possible.
The rules are tight: only the marked Hourtin Port and Lachanau zones, and at Hourtin Port you stay south of the yellow-buoy line. In north wind the launch sits in a wind shadow, so on those days people launch and land from the water. June to October is the window, on the same Medoc thermal/frontal pattern as Lachanau.

Typical strength

Summer thermal is commonly 8-15 knots, which is the figure to plan around; 10-20 knots is also quoted, and 35-40 knots is possible in September-October depression systems.

Generally flat-water lake wind; north wind creates a wind shadow near the launch, and depression winds can be strong and gusty.
Thermals start around May; depression winds are the norm from November to April. June-October is the main window.

The quiver, in words

For twin-tip riding on the Lacanau/Hourtin lakes, a light-wind kite around 11-14 m2 covers summer and 6-9 m2 covers winter depression winds, adjusted for rider weight.

Direction to shore

The kite beach sits at the north-east corner of the lake and faces roughly west-southwest. Open water runs several kilometres from due south round through west to north-west, so NW, W, SW and S all arrive onshore or cross-onshore, and those are the four directions the spot works on.N, NE and E come off the pines behind the beach; north wind in particular leaves the sand in a dead patch, which is why riders walk out and launch and land from the water on those days. The orientation is read off the lake outline, not from a published local bulletin.

Dominant direction

N, SW, NW; summer thermals often turn W to NW in the afternoon, with westerly to southwesterly depression winds in autumn.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

Shorty or light full suit in summer depending on wind chill; full winter suit out of season.

No tidal current. Some stronger flow near the channels is reported, but current is not a real issue at Hourtin Port.

Rescue

Nothing covers the kite zone. The lake bathing beach next to the marina, just north of the kite beach, is a supervised beach with municipal lifeguards in the summer season, but its flagged area is not where you ride and the 2026 dates and hours are not published online.
The school coaches its kite lessons by radio and puts a safety boat out for wingfoil; that boat is for its own clients. This is inland fresh water, so an emergency call goes to 112 or 18, not to the 196 sea-rescue line.

Launch

Dedicated kite beach south of the tourist beach at Hourtin Port, marked by a wooden barrier/signage for the kite zone.

Space

Medium/good lake launch with parking, shops and amenities close by; the water area is shared courteously with windsurfers.

Hazards riders report 5

  • Wind shadow near the launch in north wind
  • Must stay south of the buoy line
  • Navigation must stay south of the yellow-buoy line inside the kite zone
  • Shared with the windsurfing base; follow the navigation priorities
  • Possible stronger flow near the channels, unconfirmed
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing on Lac de Carcans-Hourtin is regulated and in practice only the two accesses at Hourtin Port and Lachanau are used. At Hourtin Port the kite zone is marked by round yellow buoys and navigation stays south of the buoy line; the beach itself is signed as a kite zone behind a wooden barrier, south of the tourist beach. Kitesurfing elsewhere on the lake, Carcans Maubuisson included, is forbidden. The order in force is the prefectural navigation order of 1 September 2014, and its published summary is stricter than what happens on the water: it allows kitesurf only from 15 November to 31 March, north of a notional line from the Pointe Blanche to the Lacanau channel, and outside the shore bands. Nobody has published a reconciliation between that text and the summer school activity, so ask the town hall before counting on a July session. General lake rules: no night navigation, 5 km/h in the shore band and in the channels, and all nautical activity banned inside the national nature reserve perimeter.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig on the kite beach south of the tourist beach, past the wooden barrier, not on the swimming beach.
  • In north wind, walk out and launch and land from the water; the beach itself is in a wind shadow.
  • Stay south of the yellow buoys and give way to the windsurfers under the navigation priorities; the zone is shared.
  • Check the Hourtin Lac live wind station before driving; 8-15 knots is a normal summer afternoon, so pack the 11-14 m2 or the foil.
