Lacanau lake is where the Lacanau schools teach, and it is the fallback when the Atlantic is onshore and the shorebreak is not worth the fight.
The kite area is on the east shore by the Halte Nautique at Lacanau-Ville: flat to choppy freshwater, reportedly shallow for about 300 m before it drops off, buoyed into a practice zone and a teaching zone, and you do not ride outside them.
Summer wind is a 10-20 kt thermal from the west sector that fills in early afternoon, usually WNW by the end of it; the morning east breeze is offshore and pushes you away from the launch. September and October depressions can bring 35-40 kt from the southwest, a different lake altogether.
The launch is grass and sand with pine trees close enough to bend the wind and grab a kite, clumps of grass and brambles that catch lines while you rig, and patches of alios hardpan under the water that will find a fin or a foot.
Beginners learn here with a school and stand up the whole time; a solo rider needs to know the zones, skip the east morning wind and watch for windsurfers and, in summer, swimmers. Duck-hunting blinds appear on the lake from August to February.

fills in: The land breeze runs in the morning. The shift starts around midday, the west-sector thermal builds through the afternoon and holds into the evening, usually WNW by the end of it.

Typical strength

10-20 kt on a normal summer thermal day; September and October depressions can bring 35-40 kt, and a squall inside a depression can add another 20 kt on top of what you rigged for.

Generally protected and useful for lessons once the afternoon thermal fills in, but W/NW can be gusty near the shore and N is disturbed close to the beach.
June to October are the best months; lessons run from April/May to early November when the wind cooperates. Summer is mostly thermal, autumn brings stronger frontal southwest systems.

The quiver, in words

Sizes used along the Gironde coast run 11-14 m twintip for the summer thermal and 6-9 m for winter depression days. On this lake's usual 10-20 kt that puts a 75-85 kg rider on 12-14 m while the afternoon thermal is still building and on 9-10 m once it settles at 18-20 kt. Regional guidance, with no lake-specific figures published.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

freshwater lake

Standing depth

Shallow across the learning and navigation area: Evolution 2 teaches its lessons standing throughout the learning zone, and the water reportedly stays shallow for about 300 m before it deepens.

Tides

None; freshwater lake and tide-independent.

Wetsuit

Summer is shorts/shorty conditions, spring and autumn call for a normal wetsuit, and winter calls for a thick wetsuit; schools include wetsuits and booties for lessons.

Currents

No tide current; wind can push riders away from the launch in offshore/east morning flow.

12–22°C water
Flat to choppy freshwater lake inland from Lacanau-Ocean. The kite area is buoyed and regulated, with separate practice and teaching zones. The launch has grass and sand but is close to pine trees, mottes of grass and ronces. Alios/hardpan reef and shallow patches are reported around parts of the zone.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
A teaching and progression lake: shallow, flat, several schools. Solo riders still have to respect the strict zones and stay off the water in the offshore morning wind; the trees and the alios keep it an intermediate spot rather than a free-for-all.

Launch

Come in from Lacanau-Ville by the Halte Nautique and the Promenade de Pech-Lebre, about 2 km out from the town centre, and park at the lakeside car park roughly 100 m from the water. Rig on the grass, launch off the sand, stay inside the buoyed zone, and use the channel in summer when the beach has bathers on it. Ride north of the beach for steadier wind.

Hazards riders report 13

  • pine-tree turbulence at launch
  • underwater alios reef
  • windsurfers
  • swimmers in summer
  • duck-hunting blinds from August to February
  • Pine trees cause wind turbulence at launch and can catch kites
  • Mottes of grass and ronces can catch lines during rigging
  • Alios/hardpan reef under the water can injure riders or damage fins
  • Windsurfers and other lake users
  • Swimmers in summer
  • Duck-hunting blinds and hunting activity from August to February
  • Morning east wind is offshore from the east-shore launch
  • Kite navigation outside the marked zones is prohibited
Rules & access
Kitesurfing on Lac de Lacanau is set by prefectural order and the zones are buoyed: two areas reserved for kitesurf, one on each side of the Talaris marina channel on the east shore, and riding anywhere else on the lake is forbidden.
The 1 September 2014 order caps kite height at 30 m above the water and forbids crossing from one zone to the other on the water - you walk round by the beach. In summer, with bathers on the beach, you go out through the marked channel.
Duck-hunting runs 1 August to 28 February, and hunting installations are to be given 150 m of clearance between 19:00 and 09:00. Still the wording in force as read in 2026.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Wait for the afternoon west-sector thermal; the morning east wind is offshore and pushes you away from the launch.
  • Rig away from the grass clumps and brambles, and not in the lee of the pines.
  • When bathers are on the beach in summer, go out through the channel and stay inside the buoyed kite zones; kite height is capped at 30 m.
  • Ride north of the beach when you can; the wind there is stronger and steadier.
  • Wear booties: there is alios hardpan under parts of the zone.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Lac de Lacanau?

May to October is best, with a light to moderate afternoon thermal, commonly 10-20 knots, from the west sector in summer and stronger 35-40 knot depressions possible in September and October.

Is Lac de Lacanau suitable for beginners?

Yes, several schools use the shallow, flat designated learning zone, though independent riders still need to respect the marked zones and avoid the offshore morning east wind.

What is the wind like?

The dominant directions are SW, WSW, W, WNW and NW, with the afternoon thermal usually building from midday and often turning WNW.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

A 2014 prefectural order limits kiting to two reserved zones on either side of the Talaris marina channel, bans crossing between them, and caps kite height at 30 m.

What hazards should I know about?

Pine trees near the launch cause wind turbulence, an underwater alios reef sits in parts of the zone, and morning wind from the east blows offshore.
