On the clock

14:00 · 18:00

Outside summer there is no daily rhythm to plan around, because the useful wind arrives with Atlantic fronts and can already be up at dawn. On top of that sits a steady afternoon build, strongest from about 14:00 to 18:00, driven by the sea breeze coming in over the dunes; in the warm months that build is the whole story, and those are the months the spot is closed. Indicative pattern from long-run hourly data rather than a local station.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Navarrosse is the lake option for Biscarrosse: a freshwater spot at Port de Navarrosse on Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet, no tide, no waves, shallow enough to stand near the shore and flat to slightly choppy further out.
Park on the east side of the port, rig on the port beach and ride the stretch between the Navarrosse channel and the hunting blind.
It works in W, NW or N; N and NW are the better ones because the wind has more fetch across the lake, and the forest around the shore takes some of it, so it blows lighter here than on the ocean beaches. That is why beginners and intermediates like it.
The catch is the calendar: riding is closed or not authorized in the summer bathing period, 1 June to 31 August, and the 2014 lake order names only Mayotte and the Sanguinet shore as kite zones, so read the sign at the port before you rig. Easy water is not the same as no hazards.
Alios rock blocks sit on the lake bed, trees stand right behind the launch, the port channel downwind carries boat traffic and a stronger current, and the tonne de chasse to the northeast reportedly has stakes or rebar around it.
How hard it actually blows on an average day is unconfirmed; the only figure on record is 20.6 kts for Oct-Mar with no visible basis.

fills in: Outside summer there is no daily rhythm to plan around, because the useful wind arrives with Atlantic fronts and can already be up at dawn. Typical strength

Rideable days sit between about 12 and 20 kn, and the strong fronts push past that; the pines around the shore skim a couple of knots off whatever the ocean beaches are getting. Roughly one daytime hour in twelve across the year reaches 12 kn, so this is a forecast spot, not a turn-up spot. Indicative: no wind station stands on the water at Navarrosse.

Fairly stable for a lake ringed by forest, but lighter than the ocean beaches: the trees take part of the wind.
Ride it September to May. June-August is the bathing season and kiting is avoided or prohibited; the sign at the port settles it.

Also on record

20.6 kts is the only average on record, for Oct-Mar; how it was calculated is unconfirmed.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider on a twin-tip, a 12 m covers the ordinary September-to-May day. Drop to 9-10 m when a front takes it over 20 kn, and go 14-15 m or foil on the soft afternoons that make up much of April and May.Indicative sizing worked back from the wind range, not from a count of what gets rigged on the beach.

Direction to shore

N is side-on at the port beach. W and NW work too, but the angle depends on exactly where you launch.

Dominant direction

N, NW or W. N and NW are the better two: more fetch across the lake.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow off the port beach and you can stand a long way out. On a foil that works against you: expect to walk several minutes before there is enough water under the mast. Beginners should still work away from the launch rather than sit in front of it.

Tides

No tide.

Temperature

18-21°C summer · 11-12°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer: shorty or light full suit depending on the wind. Outside summer a full suit, and a 5/3 for the off-season.

Currents

No tide and no ocean current. The port channel downwind is the exception: reportedly a stronger flow there, plus boat traffic.

Rescue

No kite rescue on the lake, and the lifeguarding that exists covers the summer bathing season, which is exactly when kiting is shut. Plan on self-rescue and a long swim; the boats you see are port traffic and jet skis, not cover. Emergency calls go to 112, or 18 for the fire service.

Launch

Park at the east side of Port de Navarrosse and launch from the port beach; ride between the Navarrosse channel and the hunting blind/tonne de chasse.

Hazards riders report 15

  • Hunting blind (tonne de chasse) to the northeast of the spot, reportedly with stakes or rebar around it.
  • Get out past the 300 m band rather than riding the shoreline.
  • Hunting blind/tonne de chasse northeast of the spot with possible stakes or rebar
  • Cabins/hunting blinds: stay clear
  • Alios rock blocks on the lake bed
  • Trees bordering the launch area
  • Port channel downwind with boat traffic and stronger current
  • The conche north of the spot is reportedly off-limits; yellow buoys mark it.
  • Hunting blind (tonne de chasse) northeast of the spot, reportedly with stakes or rebar around it
  • Port channel downwind with boat traffic and a stronger flow
  • Jet skis: Port de Navarrosse is their only authorised launch on the lakes, Monday to Thursday 15:00-19:00
  • North end of the lake closed to all navigation on working days, marked by yellow conical buoys; military zone
  • 3 kn speed limit inside 300 m of the bank, so get out past that band rather than working the shoreline
  • Cabins and hunting blinds: stay clear
  • Kiting is banned inside the town's port zones and inside marked bathing areas
Rules & access
2026: the municipal nautical regulation for the Biscarrosse lakes allows kitesurf and windsurf under the general rules and at the rider's own responsibility, but bans both inside marked bathing zones and inside the town's port zones, and names the water access for kitesurfers as the one by the Mayotte campsite. Craft within 300 m of the bank are held to 3 kn. The north end of the lake is closed to all navigation on working days, marked with yellow conical buoys about a metre across; it is a military zone, not a nature reserve. Jet skis may launch on the lakes only from Port de Navarrosse, Monday to Thursday 15:00-19:00 and never at weekends or on holidays (prefectoral order of 30 June 2006). The 2014 inter-prefectoral order on Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet (DDTM/SPEMA/AL/2014 n°1954, art. 3-7) names dedicated kitesurf zones only at Mayotte and on the Sanguinet shoreline. In practice the port beach is ridden 1 September-31 May, outside the summer bathing season. Read the sign posted at the port before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the date before you drive out: the port beach is a September to May spot, and from 1 June to 31 August the nearby summer alternative is Mayotte.
  • Rig well clear of the trees and walk the kite to the water; in gusty or underpowered lake wind the trees behind the launch are the first thing you hit.
  • Give the tonne de chasse to the northeast a wide berth and treat anything sticking out of the water near it as rebar.
  • Do not let yourself drift downwind into the port channel, and stay out of the conche to the north marked with yellow buoys.
  • Park on the east side of Port de Navarrosse; the launch is the port beach right in front of you.
  • Get out beyond the 300 m band rather than working the shoreline; the alios blocks are on the lake bed and the shore is where the trees are.
  • Do not let yourself drift downwind into the port channel, and stay out of the zone north of the spot marked with yellow buoys.
  • Monday to Thursday from 15:00 the jet skis launch from this port and nowhere else on the lakes; keep the channel clear in those hours.
  • The municipal text bans kiting inside port zones and names Mayotte as the kite access, so read the sign at Navarrosse before you commit.

FAQ

Is Navarrosse suitable for beginners?

Yes; sources classify it as beginner-friendly to intermediate, with shallow, flat freshwater and no waves, though trees, rocks and the port channel still require basic self-control.

What is the wind like?

The best documented directions are W, NW and N, and the wind blows less strongly than at ocean beaches because surrounding forest blocks part of it.

When is the best time to visit?

The public practice season is September through May, since June through August is closed or not authorized for the summer bathing period.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

Navigation is reported not authorized from 1 June to 31 August under a local arrêté, so riders should check the posted sign before riding outside that season.

What are the main hazards?

A hunting blind with possible stakes northeast of the spot, alios rock blocks on the lake bed, and the port channel with boat traffic downwind.
