Port de l'Estey is the Sanguinet side of Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet: freshwater, no tide, and a launch so small that the local habit is to launch the kite from the water. Depth comes fast.
A small sandbank just off the beach gives way and you soon cannot stand, which is why foilers like it and why it is not a spot to learn on your own. The port channel sits downwind to the right, so start with upwind margin and do not let a bad tack take you into it.
North of the zone the Conche de Sanguinet is closed to kites and marked with yellow buoys; the 300 m shoreline band has a 5 km/h limit and the supervised bathing zones are off limits in season. The military zone on the lake is closed on working days and its northern 300 m part is closed permanently.
Lessons run by boat: Kite-Particulier takes students from the port to a waist-deep sandbank in the middle of the lake from 04/04/2026 to 27/09/2026, a softer setup than the beach launch and not to be confused with it.
Usable wind is SW through NW; the nearby ocean gives the region regular thermals, but nobody has measured average knots at this launch. April to September is the working season.

Typical strength

No range has ever been measured at the launch. The Cazaux air-base station at the north end of the same lake averages 7 knots across all hours of the year, west dominant, with mean gusts around 22, so the kiteable days are the windy tail of that distribution rather than the ordinary afternoon. Regional figure, not a spot measurement.

SW, W, WNW and NW all work. Spring thermals and winter depressions are reportedly regular on the sheltered lake; unconfirmed.
Kite-Particulier teaches from Port de l'Estey from 04/04/2026 to 27/09/2026 under Bisca Grands Lacs. The ocean nearby gives the region regular thermal wind, but there is no official season for independent kiting at this launch.

The quiver, in words

No local size data; indicative, read off the wind range rather than measured here. For a 75-85 kg rider: 12-14 m twintip on an ordinary lake afternoon, 9-10 m when a depression pushes it past 20 knots. Most days sit under twintip threshold, which is why the foilers on 9-12 m are the ones getting water time.

Direction to shore

The launch is on the eastern shore of the lake, so the working SW to NW sector arrives across open water: onshore to side-onshore, closer to sideshore on a due-south day. Read off the shoreline orientation, not measured on site.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

At Port de l'Estey a small sandbank gives way fast and you soon cannot stand. The teaching sandbank in the middle of the lake is waist-deep, reached by boat.

Tides

No ocean tide influence on the lake; described as no tidal influence but possible lake-level variation.

Temperature

28°C summer

Wetsuit

Warm freshwater in summer. Winter lake temperature is unconfirmed; use normal cold-water judgment.

Currents

No wave or tidal current on the lake. The port channel is downwind, and drifting into it is the hazard.

12–23°C water
Freshwater lake spot on Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet. The lake is clear and calm with shallow edges along most of its banks, but at the Port de l'Estey launch the bottom drops away quickly.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate to expert for the beach launch: tiny launch, quick depth drop, port channel downwind. The boat-accessed sandbank the school uses is beginner-friendly, but that is not the same thing as launching from the beach on your own.

Rules & access
2026: kite-surf is banned at all times inside the marked polygon on Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet, and the only authorised departure zones are Port de l'Estey and Plage des Aynes, each marked by buoys. Eight yellow spherical buoys of 0.80 m mark the 300 m shore band between Put Blanc and Port de l'Estey; inside that band the limit is 5 km/h and supervised bathing zones are closed to all craft. The Conche de Sanguinet north of the zone is marked by yellow buoys and closed to kites. The Cazaux air-base firing zone is closed to all navigation on working days and open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays unless BA 120 orders say otherwise; its northern 300 m strip, marked with rigid red flags on 1 m yellow buoys, is closed permanently. The framework is the 2024 inter-prefectural decree, alongside the 2023 rules and the 2026 navigation fee schedule. A sign at the port carries the current version, and the commune navigation service answers on 05 58 78 60 15 or navigation@sanguinet.fr, weekdays 9-12 and 14-17, Saturday mornings, closed Wednesday.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find the yellow-buoy line of the Conche de Sanguinet before you launch; north of it is closed to kites.
  • Start with upwind margin; the port channel is downwind on your right and drifting into it is the local hazard.
  • Launch the kite in the water when the beach is packed; that is the practice on this tiny strip.
  • Do not confuse the school's waist-deep sandbank, reached by boat, with the beach launch at the port; the beach drops off fast.
  • Read the sign at the port on arrival; it carries the current rules.
  • If the buoy line is not obvious on the day, ring the commune navigation service on 05 58 78 60 15 before you rig.
  • Bring the foil. The lake end at Cazaux averages 7 knots over the year, and most days are light rather than windy.
