Lachanau is the wild one of the two legal kite accesses on Lac de Carcans-Hourtin, the other being Hourtin Port. Freshwater, no tide, flat when the thermal is light and choppy once a front comes through.
Summer runs on thermals: east in the morning, swinging northwest around midday and building through the afternoon, usually 8-15 knots and on a good day 10-20, then fading toward evening. September and October bring the depressions, with 35-40 knots on the big days and a lot more gust.
The launch is small and marshy, often under water, with mud in places, and the whole spot is boxed in by the yellow buoys, so on a north or northwest day a rider who cannot hold upwind is outside the zone in minutes. Beginners and families: go to Hourtin Port instead.
Houses and hunting blinds sit around the access, and how you park and behave on the road is part of whether this spot stays open.

fills in: Thermal setup: east in the morning, turning northwest around midday and strengthening in the afternoon when conditions align.

Typical strength

Summer thermal wind commonly 8-15 knots, though reported ranges vary up to 10-20 knots for summer thermals, with up to 35-40 knots in September-October depression systems.

Thermals can be light and fade in the evening; frontal/depression wind can be much stronger and gustier.
Thermals start around May and carry the summer; June to October are the months to plan around. From November to April it is depression wind or nothing.

The quiver, in words

Twin-tip sizing for the Lacanau and Hourtin lakes: a light-wind kite around 11-14 m2 for the summer thermals, 6-9 m2 for the winter depressions, adjusted for your weight.

Direction to shore

The launch is on the eastern shore, roughly halfway up the lake, and faces about due west. Open water runs five kilometres and more from south-west through west to north-west, so SW, W, NW and S arrive onshore or cross-onshore and those are the working directions. E and SE blow offshore over houses and pines.N is side-shore at best and runs along the bank toward the southern buoy line, which is exactly why a rider who cannot hold upwind in a north or north-west wind ends up outside the zone within minutes. The orientation is read off the lake outline, not from a published local bulletin.

Dominant direction

N, SW, NW; summer thermals often turn W to NW in the afternoon, with westerly to southwesterly depression winds in autumn.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

There are shallow patches where you can stand, reportedly, but nobody publishes where the standing depth ends at Lachanau.

Wetsuit

Shorty or light full suit in summer depending on wind chill; full winter suit out of season.

Freshwater lake spot on Lac de Carcans-Hourtin. The Lachanau launch is more natural than Hourtin Port, often marshy/inundated, with mud in places.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Not a beginner spot, whatever a generic directory shows. The zone is small, the yellow buoys box you in, and in north or northwest wind a rider who cannot hold upwind is out of the zone in minutes. Learners and families should use Hourtin Port.

Rescue

Nothing covers independent riders here. There is no lifeguard post on this stretch of shore, no boat on call and nothing posted at the access; the nearest supervised beach is up at Hourtin-Port and its flagged area is a different part of the lake.
This is inland fresh water, so an emergency call goes to 112 or 18, not the 196 sea-rescue line. If you ride with one of the schools working out of the zone, ask what cover it runs before you go out.

Launch

Small, wild lake access at Lachanau with a marshy, often inundated launch and muddy bottom. Do not rig on the small sandy beach.

Space

Small and often overcrowded, with schools present; gear must not be left blocking the takeoff area.

Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing on Lac de Carcans-Hourtin is regulated and in practice only the two accesses at Hourtin Port and Lachanau are used. At Lachanau you stay inside the round yellow buoys and never ride south of them, and riding in the small beach to the left of the take-off zone is formally forbidden. The access is residential: drive slowly, park without blocking the road, keep the noise down and do not sleep on the access path; do not rig on the small sandy beach. The order in force is the prefectural navigation order of 1 September 2014, and its published summary is stricter than what happens on the water: it allows kitesurf only from 15 November to 31 March, north of a notional line from the Pointe Blanche to the Lacanau channel, and outside the shore bands. No reconciliation between that text and the summer school activity has been published. General lake rules: no night navigation, 5 km/h in the shore band and channels, and all nautical activity banned inside the national nature reserve perimeter.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Go to Hourtin Port if you are learning or have family in tow; the Lachanau zone is too small to learn in.
  • Keep at least 50 m from the hunting blinds (tonnes de chasse) around the shore.
  • Park along the approach road without blocking emergency access, and do not sleep in the van there; the neighbours are the reason the zone still exists.
  • Rig on the marshy side and never on the small sandy beach left of the takeoff; expect mud on your feet and keep your gear out of the launch lane.
  • Bring the big kite for summer, 11-14 m2; 8-15 knots is a normal thermal day.
  • Start heading in as soon as the thermal softens in the evening; it fades fast and the buoys are close.
