Lido di Volano sits where the Po Delta meets the Adriatic, in the Ferrara province, and DKWA is the spot. The club works out of Bagno Ipanema with kitesurf, windsurf and SUP, kite setup and washing areas, showers and an anemometer, and it runs a 120 m buoyed corridor out through the bathers in season.
The sand shelves gradually, the water goes from chop to small waves, and high tide is the better half of the day. The useful sector is SE through NE; the common summer thermal is a SE that fills in early afternoon at 10-15 knots, which is light if you are heavy.
March, April, May, June, October and November are the months worth booking. Beginners and intermediates get on fine here and there is little for an advanced rider to chase. The beach is long but narrow, so in July that corridor is the difference between a session and an argument.
Exact corridor boundaries have never been published.

A simple spot. Speak to the locals before you go in.
March to June and October to November are the months worth planning around. Through summer a SE thermal is often in from the first hours of the afternoon at 10-15 knots, light if you are heavy, and it puts you on starboard tack. The useful sector is SE through NE, side-shore to side-onshore.
The club's corridor is up through the bathing season, though its opening dates are not published.

The quiver, in words

Nothing is published by rider weight. The school teaches on four-line kites from 7 to 13 m, chosen for the day, which brackets what the spot normally asks for.On the usual 10-15 knot summer SE thermal a 75-85 kg rider sits at the top of that band or above it, so a 13 m and up, or a foil; the 9-11 m comes out on the spring and autumn fronts. Indicative sizes, derived from the local wind range rather than from a published local recommendation.

Direction to shore

SE to NE is side-shore to side-onshore.

Dominant direction

NE, E, SE and S are listed for the spot; the optimal sector is SE to NE.

The model is wrong here

The model reads 13% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season and the wind strength this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

You can stand a very long way out. Off the club the sand shelves so gently that the water is about 1 m deep some 100 m from the edge, roughly 1.5 m at 300-400 m, and it only passes 2 m around 900 m out, still under 3 m at 1.5 km.Those depths are read from hydrographic charting rather than measured on the beach, and sandbars and the tide shift them, which is part of why high water is the better half of the day.

Tides

High tide is best; no measured tidal range is available.

Temperature

26.1°C summer · 8.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer water is warm; winter water around 8-10 C requires a full winter wetsuit.

8–29°C water
Open Adriatic beach at the Po Delta: sand, chop and small waves. Water quality is rated medium and high tide is the better time. A bathing ban applies in the navigable submarine channel to the port of Goro at Lido di Volano, which concerns the wider lido rather than a confirmed kite launch boundary.

Rescue

The club keeps a safety boat for recoveries at sea; operating dates, hours and any fee are unpublished. Riding here runs through club membership, valid a year and lapsing on 30 September, with a non-competitive sports medical certificate required, so the boat is part of the club's setup rather than a public service. There is no independent kite-rescue operation on this beach.

Launch

The club works out of Bagno Ipanema on Via Lungomare del Parco, with lessons also run from Bagno Pinguino at Lido di Volano and Bagno Huna at Lido di Spina. Sea access in front of the club is a 120 m corridor marked with floating buoys where bathing is prohibited.Large shaded rigging area, compressor for pumping kites, kite washing, a digital anemometer, changing rooms, storage and waste sorting.

  • narrow beach despite long shoreline

  • navigable submarine channel to the port of Goro in the wider Lido di Volano area
  • long shoreline but a narrow beach, with little clean sand outside the club areas
  • check in with the club or the local riders before your first launch
  • the navigable submarine channel into the port of Goro in the wider Lido di Volano area, closed to bathing
  • a light summer thermal at 10-15 knots, under-powered for a heavy rider
Rules & access
  • 2026: access to the water in front of the club runs through a 120 m corridor marked by floating buoys where bathing is prohibited, and the club operates it through the bathing season. Riding from here means joining the association: membership lasts a year and lapses automatically on 30 September, and a non-competitive sports medical certificate has to be filed.
  • 2022: Comune di Comacchio bathing ordinance n. 132/2022, integrative to the regional and maritime-authority rules that remain in force, records a bathing ban in the navigable submarine channel to the port of Goro at Lido di Volano. No current municipal document mapping the kite corridor has been found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Talk to DKWA or the local riders before your first launch; the local guidance is explicit about checking in.
  • In bathing season stay inside the 120 m buoyed corridor and keep well off the swimmers either side of it.
  • Rig in the association areas when they are operating; the beach is long but there is not much clean sand elsewhere.
  • Bring the big kite. The summer SE thermal at 10-15 knots is light for a heavy rider.
  • Time the session for high tide.
  • Talk to the club or the local riders before your first launch; the local guidance is explicit about checking in.
  • Membership is not optional: annual sign-up plus a non-competitive sports medical certificate, so sort the paperwork before you travel.
  • The shallow band runs so far out that a crash 300 m from the beach still leaves you standing.
  • The crossing to the Isola dell'Amore peninsula in the delta park is about 1.5 nautical miles from the club.
