When it fills in
Synoptic Baltic wind with no daily cycle to wait for. It comes in with the front and holds as long as the system does, so the check that matters is the forecast a day or two out rather than the hour of the day.

Character
synoptic
fills in: Synoptic Baltic wind with no daily cycle to wait for. It comes in with the front and holds as long as the system does, so the check that matters is the forecast a day or two out rather than the hour of the day.
Typical strength
The Northern Breakwater wave setup wants 10+ m/s. Monthly averages around Liepāja run about 9-17 kt, so those days are the exception rather than the week.
Also on record
Nearby Liepāja Airport annual average 8 kt
The quiver, in words
Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, read off the wind range rather than from a local rider: 9 m for the ordinary southwest day, 7 m once the breakwater wave setup is running at 10 m/s and above, 12 m for the light summer averages around 8-9 kt.Nothing local is published, so treat these as a starting point and ask at the launch.
Direction to shore
West and southwest work on the west-facing side. SW and WSW are the Northern Breakwater directions, NW leaves smooth water in the lee, and N, S and W also turn up as best directions for the enclosed Karosta spot.
Dominant direction
SW/W/NW, with N/S/W also listed for the enclosed Karosta spot

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
flat and chop around the mole/breakwater, with wave conditions on the exposed side in strong SW-W winds
Standing depth
Sandy bottom, no measured depth on either side of the mole. Submerged steel structures and stakes sit in the water behind the breakwater, so shallow ground here is something to walk carefully rather than a safety margin to rely on. Check the entry on foot before you commit a board; there is no tide to change what you find.
Tides
Tide independent.
Temperature
18-20°C summer · 2-4°C winter
Wetsuit
Shorty or full suit in summer, full in spring and autumn, thick in winter.

Launch
Sand and asphalt. Parking close to the beach on the Karosta side, and a large car park with public toilets at the Northern Breakwater, which runs 1,800 m out from the shore and is 7.35 m wide. Rock and asphalt around the launch areas, Soviet fort ruins on the bank above.
Space
Medium launch size.

Rider tips
- Walk the water entry and the downwind stretch before you launch; there is steel under the surface and rock and asphalt around the launch.
- Take the sheltered side of the mole only if you can read what the mole is doing to the wind behind it.
- Keep off the Karosta fort ruins and do not rig under them; walking underneath is reportedly forbidden and the coast is collapsing.
- Save MRCC Riga before you go on the water: 115 or +371 67323103, or 112. Nobody is watching this beach.
- The Northern Breakwater car park is the launch access with toilets; the Karosta beach side has parking but nothing else.
