When it fills in

Frontal wind rather than a daily sea breeze, so there is no fill-in hour to wait for: it blows while a system crosses and can hold overnight. Plan off the synoptic forecast, not off the clock. Whether high summer adds an afternoon sea-breeze on top of the gradient has not been documented for this beach.

In Latvia, Liepāja is the city where the wind is born. The annual average wind direction at Liepāja Airport is southwest, which is side-onshore on this west-facing Baltic coast. The main city beach is long and sandy, shared with windsurfers and swimmers, and split into sections by signs that say which activity belongs where.
The kite community and the training area sit at the beach end of Vaiņodes Street, on the southern city beach. This record covers that open beach; the Northern Breakwater at Karosta and Liepāja Lake are separate rides with their own directions and their own difficulty.
Summer water is 18-20°C and winter 2-4°C, so the windiest months are also the ones that need the thickest rubber.

Typical strength

Monthly average wind speeds are about 9-17 kt, with higher values in winter and shoulder seasons.

Often windy by Latvia standards, but exposed Baltic frontal/synoptic conditions can be gusty and wave-dependent.
May to October is the season on the spot page. Days with wind turn up all year, but Baltic water outside summer decides the day for you.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

No meaningful tide. Baltic water level moves with the weather rather than the moon, and the kite record carries no tide value at all.

Temperature

18-20°C summer · 2-4°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer can be shorty/full suit conditions; cold-season Baltic riding requires a thick suit.

2–21°C water
Fine white sand, 8 km of it, 50-80 m wide, with the activity zones signed along the way. On the right direction it rides as a wave spot rather than a chop spot.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The southern beach spot is marked beginner level and open to any rider, and the city beach is where the teaching happens. The technical wave and Big Air conditions are up at Karosta and the Northern Breakwater, not on this stretch.

Rescue

A rescue service works the city beach through the summer season and the lifeguard post sits on the central beach, next to the accessible entrance; the marked activity zones are part of the same setup. Outside the bathing season, and away from the bathing section, plan on self-rescue. Latvia's emergency number is 112.

Launch

Long sandy city beach; the local club/training area is at the beach end of Vaiņodes Street on the southern beach.

Hazards riders report 7

  • open Baltic beach exposure
  • recorded gusts to 48 m/s in extreme storms (Oct 1967)
  • open Baltic exposure and surf
  • summer beach users and signed activity zoning
  • white phosphorus can wash ashore and resemble amber after strong southwest winds
  • strong storms and severe-weather risk in autumn and winter
  • swimmers and beach users inside the marked bathing zone through the summer season
Rules & access
2026: signs run the length of the beach marking which activity each section is for, and the marked active-recreation zone is the one to ride in. The bathing section carries a Blue Flag in summer and dogs have to be on a lead. The exact current municipal map of the zone boundaries was not found, so read the signs on the day.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride inside the signed active-recreation section of the city beach in summer; the signs say which stretch is for what.
  • Read W as straight onshore and SW or NW as the useful side-onshore days on the main west-facing beach.
  • Do not pocket amber-looking lumps off the strandline: white phosphorus washes ashore here and looks much the same.
  • NW is the direction that gives the city beach its smoothest water, and it is the one foilers pick; SW is when the wave and trick option up at the Karosta northern mole comes alive, with stones on the bottom there.
  • The club sits at the beach end of Vainodes iela and takes visitors by prior arrangement: +371 29 138 103.

FAQ

Is Liepāja suitable for beginners?

Yes, the southern city beach suits all levels and is used for training, while more technical wave and big-air conditions are found around Karosta and the Northern Breakwater.

What is the wind like at Liepāja?

Southwest through northwest is the most favourable setup on this west-facing beach, with monthly average speeds of about 9-17 knots.

When is the best time to kite at Liepāja?

May to October is the listed season, though many windy days occur year-round and the Baltic water is cold outside summer.

Are there rules at Liepāja beach?

Signs along the beach indicate which activity each section is meant for, and the active-recreation zoning must be observed in the city-beach area.

What hazards should riders know about?

Open Baltic exposure brings surf and storm risk, and white phosphorus can occasionally wash ashore after strong southwest winds, resembling amber.
