When it fills in

The SW Lebeche thermal in this region forms around midday and holds through the afternoon. Levante from the E and NE and the cold northerly are synoptic and can be in at any hour, morning included. No onset hour has been measured at the Los Nietos launch itself, so the midday figure is regional.

Los Nietos and Lo Pollo are two launches on the south-west side of the Mar Menor, between Los Urrutias and Mar de Cristal. The lagoon is shallow, flat to choppy and shut off from open-sea swell, and at Los Nietos you can stand about 250 m out from shore.
The land is what separates the two: Los Nietos is a small beach against a concrete promenade, Lo Pollo is a big sandy beach with space. East and north-east Levante is the main wind, with south-easterly Jaloque also usable in summer, though summer wind here is reportedly softer.
The difficulty ratings disagree: low difficulty and good for lessons, progression and hydrofoil in some accounts, intermediate or expert in others, while Lo Pollo gets called fine for any level. That split is about the launch, not the water.
Summer still puts bathers on the sand, so the practical safety question is picking the open section and staying off the swimming water.

fills in: The SW Lebeche thermal in this region forms around midday and holds through the afternoon. Levante from the E and NE and the cold northerly are synoptic and can be in at any hour, morning included. No onset hour has been measured at the Los Nietos launch itself, so the midday figure is regional.

Typical strength

About 13 knots for a summer Los Nietos day. The local average kite is 12 m, with 7-9 m for stronger storm winds; foil riders go to 15-19 m foil kites on the light Mar Menor days.

Flat to choppy lagoon water under steady wind, which is why the teaching happens here. Northerlies in this region run colder and gustier.
Los Nietos and Lo Pollo mainly work with E and NE winds, namely Levante and Norte. Summer adds SE Jaloque alongside the NE-E Levante, though summer wind at Los Nietos is reportedly softer, around 13 kt, and autumn and winter are named as the better seasons. NW also works here but runs more unstable and more forceful.
Across the wider Costa Cálida the SW Lebeche is most frequent in spring and autumn, Levante storms come in autumn and spring, and the Norte blows from mid-autumn to early spring.

The quiver, in words

12 m is the local average size for La Manga and the south Mar Menor, with 7 m or 9 m for stronger storm winds. 15 m, 17 m and 19 m foil kites come out for hydrofoil and light-wind training.

Direction to shore

Summer SE Jaloque is cross-shore and NE-E Levante is cross-on. The Los Nietos launch stays usable in summer with the softer winds.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rules & access
2025: Los Nietos sits at the end of the promenade in a non-built-up stretch with no navigation restrictions, summer included. General Spanish beach-navigation guidance in 2026 still requires the use of marked channels where they exist and treats the first 200 m off a beach as a bathing-protection zone where that applies.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the 500 m west to Lo Pollo when the promenade beach is too tight to lay out lines.
  • Bring 12 m as your default; a lot of Mar Menor days are light, and 15-19 m foil kites get used here.
  • Keep a 7 m or 9 m in the bag for the storm days.
  • Check the beach markings and channels in summer, even though no Los Nietos-specific restriction has been reported.
  • Watch the trees behind the Los Nietos launch when you are landing a kite.
