On the clock

10:00 · 14:00 · 18:00 · 20:00

A sea-breeze rhythm. Little before 10:00, building through midday, best between 14:00 and 18:00, gone by 20:00. In spring the afternoon often swings from NE to SSW and the peak sits later; in summer it stays ENE all afternoon.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Torre Derribada is the beach immediately north of the San Pedro del Pinatar harbour, on the Mediterranean rather than the Mar Menor side. Shallow access and flat water, with chop and small waves. On southerly wind the mole holds a flat patch behind it.
That same mole is why beginners should not be here on N or NE wind, when the sensible ground is the stretch south of the harbour.
The beach sits at 37.830, -0.760: 2.2 km of fine sand backed by protected dunes on the edge of the Regional Park of Salinas and Arenales, with a big car park behind the sand and a short walk to the water.
Water runs 27.1 C in summer and 14.3 C in winter, so shorts in summer, a shorty or normal suit in spring and autumn, a full suit in winter. Nobody has published a dominant wind direction, an average strength or a kite-size range for this beach on its own, which is the main gap in the record.
The 2017 San Pedro del Pinatar ordinance closes bathing zones to kitesurf, along with surf and windsurf, from 1 June to 30 September, and a nautical-channel pilot covering this stretch of coast was discontinued by the Beach Regulatory Council rather than reinstated, so there is no marked kite channel to aim for.

Typical strength

A light-wind beach. At the station 6 km south, hourly winds average about 8 knots over the year; March is the best month with 30% of all hours at 12 knots or more and 16% at 15 or more, April close behind, and July and August drop to 16% and 4%. On a working afternoon expect 12-18 knots. Anything over 20 is rare, and the figures count every hour of the day, not just the best of the afternoon.

A kitesurf and windsurf forecast, wingfoil included, is published for Torre Derribada, but no historical account of how often it delivers.
Spring is the season: March and April carry the most hours over 12 knots, about 30% and 26%, and the strongest days of the year. Summer runs on a lighter ENE sea breeze that tops out in the low teens. October is the flattest month, and from November to January the commonest wind is offshore westerly.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider: 12-14 m does most of the work, 15-17 m on summer sea-breeze days that only just come in, 9-10 m on the strong March and April levante. Indicative, worked from the wind record 6 km away rather than from riders' own accounts at this beach.

Direction to shore

The beach faces east-southeast. NE, the commonest strong direction, arrives side-onshore from the left and drifts you down toward the harbour mole. SSW comes in side-shore from the right and leaves the flat water in the lee of the mole. W and WNW blow straight offshore.

Dominant direction

NE, the levante, is the direction that carries most of the strong hours all year, with SSW the other one that works. In late autumn and winter the commonest direction is W, which blows straight off the land here and is not rideable.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

What riders come here for

Tourists arrive in June and stay through July and August. It is a big natural Mediterranean beach and quieter outside those months, though nobody has reported how many kites turn up.

Rescue

+34 968 18 06 00

No kite-specific rescue and no lifeguard service listed for this beach: the published services stop at toilets, bins and cleaning. 112 for emergencies; the town hall is on +34 968 18 06 00. A daily bathing-condition flag for Torre Derribada is published by the municipality.

Launch

Long sandy beach north of San Pedro harbour, with a big parking lot next to the sand and a short walk to the water. There is no marked kitesurf channel at Torre Derribada: a nautical-channel pilot program covering this stretch of the San Pedro del Pinatar coast was discontinued by the Beach Regulatory Council rather than reinstated.

Rules & access
The 2017 San Pedro del Pinatar beach ordinance prohibits surf, windsurf, kitesurf plus related sea sports in bathing zones from 1 June to 30 September, to keep them clear of bathers.
Where nautical channels or marked launch and landing zones exist, they must be used, and windsurf boards, sails or similar craft may not be left on the sand outside marked concession zones. The municipality still publishes that ordinance (BORM no. 147, 28 June 2017) as the one in force in 2026.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Give the southern mole a wide margin on N and NE wind; if you are still learning, ride south of the harbour instead.
  • Wait for a southerly if you want the flat patch behind the mole.
  • Park in the big lot behind the sand; the walk to the water is short and there is no marked channel to look for.
  • Read the bathing-zone signs between 1 June and 30 September before you rig.
  • Keep off the dunes and out of the marked park ground behind the beach.
  • March and April are the windiest months. July and August bring a lighter east sea breeze that rarely passes 15 knots.
  • Nothing much blows before 10:00. The wind builds through midday and the best of it is 14:00 to 18:00.
  • W and WNW are straight offshore here, and there is no rescue cover on this beach.
